As for whether people should be allowed to have children if they can't afford to - well, set up a free abortion clinic in every county :P

Then watch how many people will want your head on the end of a spear :P

Oh, that's an excellent analogy.

But I think the same people who believe school lunch is bad believe that sexual abstinence should be the solution to THAT problem.

Gee - people who don't have 6-figure jobs shouldn't have food or sex.

Guess the only amusement left then is to hang out at the convenience store watching the fortunate members of society pump gas into their SUV's.

Gotta love that big oil mentaility.

Actually, I was the regional mgr for a chain of nail salons down in S FL. Many of them were in upper income areas, but one was in a low income area.

That salon would beat all the others in terms of revenue.

AND I used to work as a nail tech there if they were too slammed....know how many times customers asked me if I'd accept food stamps? TOO MANY.

Now let's discuss nail art. Nail art money was paid between the tech and the customer...so everyone mastered it cos it was quick fast money. And back in that day (90s) where a full set of nail art was $10 extra apart from the svc, and .25 a rhinestone....me and my girls would be getting easily $100 a day just for designs.

from the same people who asked if we could take WIC.

How do you know, may be they work as hookers or strip-dancers on a side? May be that is professional expense needed to earn their children's keep?

Assuming its means-tested - what's the problem?

What do you means by means tested?

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Yes Charles, let's. Hows about you coming to volunteer for a week or so at my school.

Charles, are you listening?

I've BEEN a school volunteer. You would not believe what I have seen.

And our family qualified for free lunches at one point also. Because of a change in family circumstance.

Don't anybody go there with me about how the FEW little things our government does to support families are a drain on this nation.

If you as a government can take my son off to war, then you can damn bloody well feed him if we fall upon hard times.

i'll try to fit that into my busy schedule while working 40-91 hours a week ;)

And good for you for having that job where you have the opportunity to make that kind of money. Not all of America is that fortunate.

For whatever it's worth, I did my volunteer time while my ex-husband was working 40-91 hours per week - which directly contributed to our divorce - which directly contributed to MY new household being eligible for free lunch.

###### has a way of happening Charles.

and at the same time, i'm working to help pay for all of that. so if i took off for a week to go to a school as you suggested, i'd not be paying my taxes due to no work and therefore stealing food from the kiddos, eh?

Charles, get over yourself.

For whatever it's worth, I never signed my son up for hot lunch. While it's true we qualified, his father was paying us child support and so I used that money to pay his monthly hot lunch bill. I could have used the 35-or-so bucks a month to help pay for his trombone lessons or other things he needed, but instead I went WITHOUT having my nails done or tanning sessions. I did what you think all the low-income single moms OUGHT to do. Does that make you feel better about yourself now?

All because a guy (his Dad) with a big job like you could crow loudly to his friends that he was paying his support on time and his kid was taken care of.

Right. Barely taken care of.

You need to thank God for the fortuitiousness of your circumstance instead of looking down on other people. I hope circumstance never rains on your parade. You may be standing in soup kitchen line someday eating more than your words.

nothing really for me to get over. i've got an opinion about this topic and you don't like it due to your past. bitter much?

In California, we even have to pay school buses - $136 per student, per semester where I'm currently living. Add the costs of clothes, medical insurance, after school activities or if both parents work, after school childcare and parents can be bogged down financially. If your kids want to participate in a sport like football, the cost can be hundreds of dollars. Putting more money into schools to pay for such things to ease the burdon off of parents is a worthwhile investment in our future generations, IMO. It's really the only way to help ensure that all children are afforded the same opportunites.

MFP, I'm confused, is this $136 paid directly by the parent(s) of the enrolled student or is that $136 per head 's being paid by the government per enrolled student? If the former, I was not aware that parents had to pay a school bus fee. Perhaps it varies by school district and counties.

As for the rest of your statement, again, we come back to can the parent(s) afford to have a child? If not, why should the individual be allowed to even have a child in the first place if he or she can't afford the financial responsibility of raising the child? Why should the rest of society pay for the upbringing of that child? Let's not even include this to immigrants or illegal immigrants. Let's specifically talk about native born USCs. If native born USCs can't afford to raise a child, then as parents, why should they be allowed to have children?

Very well said. I also agree with charging the parents for kids ridding the school bus.

*sarcastic remarks ahead*

The audacity of the poor wanting to actually treat themselves. GASP! What ARE they thinking! They're poor, they need to LOOK poor!

One can be poor and look decent. They can treat themselves all they want. They just need to support that themselves. As long as they're on public assistance, there shouldn't be room for anything beyond the necessities. If there is, then the taxpayer supports them too much. I am all for supporting needs. The wants, however, each of us has to afford for themselves.
But did you read the rest of what I posted? If your family were in tight circumstances and someone gave either of you something nice and then somewhere someone judged you because of it? I've heard it way too often..."Look at her, if she can afford to wear XYZ brands (or have her hair or nails done), then she doesn't need to be on assistance". That's what I'm referring to...the judgmental statements others make when they don't really know the whole shebang.

Give me a break, will you? Someone just dropped them a hot set of wheels too? Get outta here!

Aaah, but that's why I said "on a side"!

Of course, a good and dedicated stripper makes a lot of money, but then not all strippers want to be strippers. So may be they do it occasionally when other money and food stamps run out

Hey,

have you ever borrowed your friend's cars? I know I did. New fancy cars, which I could not afford... at the point when I could not afford to rent or buy even a junk car... but I needed a ride and I had friends...

It happens

May be their friend a drug dealer gave them a car so they could buy groceries! May be he felt charitable!

Give me a break, will you? Someone just dropped them a hot set of wheels too? Get outta here!

Thanks, I'll take it!

Maybe she doesn't make enough money at her job to pay for all of the groceries but has $20 left over to treat herself once a month.

At least I'm not the only one who thinks that this was a rather odd statement.

I know, right? Like here you are...a person who can't afford to take care of yourself and your fam....to the point that the gov't and people have to...and yet there's an 'entitlement to a treat' mentality.

I have to spell it out....what.the.fuque...

Nope I'm not bitter. I've just lived both sides of the economic spectrum that's all. At varying times in my life.

Good fortune can disappear overnite you know, Charles. Given that knowledge, it's best not to let ones 'opinion' turn to judgment.
