His 'race comments' in that quote are just plain stupid.

You've never heard of black Americans being only interested in the welfare of Africans?

Indeed. Because blacks apparently only care about other blacks.

I was waiting for you to throw that one out..

I would like to hear your opinion on Marion Barry and for you to think about which morons voted him in again. Same goes with mayor Ray Nagin.

Yes, and? Sounds about right to me.

Irrespective of what Rush says or thinks, how many freakin times have I asked what latest bandwagon issues will democrats jump on this week??

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

"This city will be a majority African-American city. It's the way God wants it to be," Nagin said. "You can't have it no other way. It wouldn't be New Orleans."

MAYOR RAY NAGIN: "We as black people, it's time, it's time for us to come together. It's time for us to rebuild a New Orleans, the one that should be a chocolate New Orleans and I don't care what people are saying uptown or wherever they are, this city will be chocolate at the end of the day."

Don't pretend racism is not a two way street and that only Caucasians dish it out mate..

As usual you latch onto the most innane comments that have the least to do with the point being made

I don't think we should cloud the issue here - what those guys have said is not really any more distinguishable from what the likes of the late Jerry Falwell and some of those other guys who associate themselves with republican politicians have said or done, and means about as much to me.

Rush Limbaugh is a radio commentator with a dedicated audience of 20 million people. I just don't understand the rush for people here to defend him and Ann Coulter and take ownership of their public statements. The double-standard being pointed out here is essentially comparing the criticism of a high-visibility media figure with the apparent lack of criticism of politicians and political supporters. I don't see how that is really the same - unless we want to address the lack of 'aggressive' leftist versions of Limbaugh on public radio and national TV?

You probably right. Liberals tend to be less aggressive but more patronizing and condescending..

The point is that its people like Rush who are essentially defining public opinion on a whole range of issues. Too much time is spent talking at things rather than about them. Entertainment aside - a demagogue is pretty useless IMO.

If there's one point of commonality that I agree with Gary upon here - its that people generally spend more time discussing people who talk about politics than they do on the politicians themselves.

Your right there as well. Rush is a commentator not a politician.

The other issue we have in the US is branding. Be it conservative or liberal. Someone is automatically branded one or another. I am right wing, a conservative but also a federalist. I wonder what that would that make me..

You do realize that Nagin was telling majority black New Orleans that he was dedicated to ensuring that post-Katrina New Orleans would have a place for its black residents at a time when quite a lot of people were arguing that the land should be abandoned or bought up by contractors, essentially turning it into a Disney-world version of a historic city. In context (and he clarified this in a later statement), all he was saying that he was dedicated to New Orleans' culture (which is historically black) and to trying to revive that city, and by chocolate he meant 'mixing brown and white to get a delicious drink'.

Is it racist to promise your constituents that you're not selling out?

And what kind of 'federalist' wants a national ID card?

You know exactly what he meant by those comments. And he wasn't talking about cadbury..

I didn't and don't quote Rush and I didn't say you have quoted them either. I listen to him and take what he says for what it is, political commentary and entertainment. Steven quoted him. I just pointed out that this is nothing different than Moore or Huffington spouting off. But when Rush or the like says something outrageous for some reason it gets a lot more air time than when a lefty does the same thing. They ran Imus off the air for Christs sake. When Moore does it he gets an academy award. Seems like unequal treatment to me.

Rush, Coulter (and to a lesser extent O'Reilly) seem to love latching onto the evils of political correctness to make their 'honest points', but they don't realise that this is precisely what alienates them from a good many people. It's also makes them appear deeply unpleasant and odious - not just in terms of what they say but in the way the engage with people. That confrontation that Coulter had with John Edwards wife - really makes me wonder what people see in those 'commentators' that they are so wound up in politics and in their own self-image that they can't answer a question in a human way. Michael Moore might say ridiculous things - but is he cruel and/or malicious in what he says? I'm not so sure...

Those Imus comments for example - are hardly something that you could reasonably expect to not cause offence to people. You can't deny that race issues are an extremely sensitive issue in this country. For God's sake - people get bent out about 'wardrobe malfunctions' on TV, and yet here this guy is making racist comments that are guaranteed to offend. Not that I think that he said that in a malicious manner - but I do think it says something about him that he was naive enough to either not knowing the meaning of what he said, or that he could say it and expect to not cause widespread offence.

This is a funny video from Chris Rock

I then stumbled across the second video; and thought about what you said in red. And what fuels the anger in others speaking out. As I said ignorance and racism is a two way street; Many seem to have forgotten that..

Something else that I find a little bizarre on those shows is why they spend such an inordinate amount of time interviewing people with extreme views so far from the mainstream as to be completely pointless.

If there wasn't such a demanding audience for 'heated debate' rather than 'informed debate' this sort of thing likely wouldn't happen.

People want to believe in stereotypical conceptions of people they disagree with - and cookie-cutter politics makes that easier to do...
