My local congressman (Pallone) mails me at home telling me about his efforts to introduce a Gandhi statue somewhere in Edison and a Diwali stamp with USPS. I read those leaflets and wonder why he isn't saying jacks$hit about the fact that NJ residents (yes, even the Indian-American ones) pay more in taxes to the Federal govt than they get back.

Oh, that's right. I'm Indian-American, so I must not care about those things. I only care about some silly Gandhi statue.

Wow. Is that what happens if you indicate your ethnic identity on government forms?

They figure it from our names. Cablevision even sends me mailings promising me "Shandaar savings" (great savings) with the inside text in an obnoxious Hinglish.

Indian Christians with Anglicized names don't get these letters. I do.

Well, what's the color of your skin? According the Limbaugh, skin color is all it takes when it comes to black folk.

I still remember a black man I worked with back in a college work-study program (he was a grad student, I was a freshman undergrad) being mad about Rwanda. Said if Rwandans were white like Kuwaitis were (I recall pointing out they're not that white, but the point that they were whiter than the people of Rwanda is true) then they would have been rescued too... just like the Kuwaitis were.

Just an anecdote. Doesn't mean #######.

Cablevision

Those bastards.

lol, their onDemand movie selections not up to your high standards? :P

I suppose there's an element of truth in just about every generalization.

Rush Limbaugh: "I know I'm no expert in foreign affairs,

Well, he's got that right. Other than that he's ... whatever.

A lying pig?

It's called an 'opinion'.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

It still doesn't add much 'intelligence' to that statement he made.

Rush is an entertainer and commentator. If you don't like him then that is your choice. I find it unreal that the left so despises him. You have your venom spouting commentators on the left but nobody seems to notice. Is there a double standard at work here?

Why do you think that 'leftist commentators' would be spokesmen of mine? I don't believe I have (ever) quoted any of those guys in support of anything I've said.

I don't watch those types of shows... at all... actually.

I didn't and don't quote Rush and I didn't say you have quoted them either. I listen to him and take what he says for what it is, political commentary and entertainment. Steven quoted him. I just pointed out that this is nothing different than Moore or Huffington spouting off. But when Rush or the like says something outrageous for some reason it gets a lot more air time than when a lefty does the same thing. They ran Imus off the air for Christs sake. When Moore does it he gets an academy award. Seems like unequal treatment to me.

'Opinions' are judged on the merits of the idea - which reflects back on the person who has it.

Rush, Coulter (and to a lesser extent O'Reilly) seem to love latching onto the evils of political correctness to make their 'honest points', but they don't realise that this is precisely what alienates them from a good many people. It's also makes them appear deeply unpleasant and odious - not just in terms of what they say but in the way the engage with people. That confrontation that Coulter had with John Edwards wife - really makes me wonder what people see in those 'commentators' that they are so wound up in politics and in their own self-image that they can't answer a question in a human way. Michael Moore might say ridiculous things - but is he cruel and/or malicious in what he says? I'm not so sure...

Those Imus comments for example - are hardly something that you could reasonably expect to not cause offence to people. You can't deny that race issues are an extremely sensitive issue in this country. For God's sake - people get bent out about 'wardrobe malfunctions' on TV, and yet here this guy is making racist comments that are guaranteed to offend. Not that I think that he said that in a malicious manner - but I do think it says something about him that he was naive enough to either not knowing the meaning of what he said, or that he could say it and expect to not cause widespread offence.

I find what Moore says (Bush was behind 9/11) just as odious as you see Rush. There are other examples of racism from the left that are far more egregious as what Imus said that didn't even make a ripple. Take Jessie Jackson, Louis Farrakan and Al Sharpton. The things that they say are astounding and yet they are given a pass. All I am saying is there seems to be a blatant double standard today.

Moore saying Bush was behind 9/11 is outrageous (in the absence of the actual quote), but to my knowledge he's not out there making broad brush comments about feminism being a vehicle for unattractive women, referring to muslims as 'ragheads' who should not be allowed to fly in planes but "use flying carpets" instead.

Michael Moore has been pretty well vilified by right leaning folks.

I would add that Limbaugh has made a few comments about blacks that make most people's skin crawl.

Almost every comment that Limbaugh makes makes MY skin crawl.

What's worse- is my parents, especially my father- think that he is a shining beacon of truth. I just think he's a modern nazi. :/ But then again- I don't like any of the extreme people (republican or democrat).
