I have a co-worker (she was born in the Phillipines) who has lived in the U.S. for 16 years and has a GC. Her Father passed away today and she needs to return to the Phillipines as soon as possible.

Does she need a Visa to return to the Phillipines? If so, how long would that take in this emergency situation?

Any advice would be appreciated.

My co-worker seems to think that she needs a visa to return to the Phillipines.

Could there be some extenuating circumstances that would require a Filipino to need a Visa to return to the Phillipines? She is not a US citizen, but could she somehow have given up her citizenship in the Phillipines?

Or, what if she did not renew her passport from the Phillipines because she has lived in the US for 16 years.

She is totally distraught and isn't really thinking very clearly right now, so we are trying to help her out.

Thanks for any help.

She must be a citizen of someplace so if not USA then where? Has to be Phillipines

Expired passport does not determine citizenship status. Many citizens of many countries do not possess passports

YMMV

Well Raymaga,

She may not need a visa, but she WILL need a passport... a valid one too..

She'll need to contact the Philippine Embassy to inquire about getting a new (and valid) passport before being able to even get on the plane CLICK HERE

If she is a Filipino citizen she will need to get a new passport. Is she married to a U.S. citizen? How did she come to America and get a green card?

We had to renew Claudeth's passport and because her green card was in her married name we had to provide a copy of our marriage certificate, her old passport, my divorce papers and her passport photographs. I know there was something else but am forgetting what it was at this moment (senior moment). She may have also needed her birth certificate but I just can't remember right now. If I get my memory back I will post later.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone.

I think what happened is my co-worker mistakenly said she need a "visa" to return to the Phillipines, when she really meant to say she needed a "passport". So, if she does need to get a new passport, does anyone know how long that would take?

Jasman..... to answer your question, she met her US citizen husband in the Phillipines, he was in the military there, they married and she came to the US afterwards. She currently has her 10-yr GC, but not US citizenship.

How long does it take to process a new passport?

If all documents required are submitted, the new passport may be released within five (5) working days from the receipt of application (do not count Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays). Due to the heave volume of applications received daily, immediate release of passports is the exception rather than the rule. Only in extreme emergency cases, such as death of a relative in the Philippines, and subject to the discretion of the consular officer, are immediate release of passports allowed.

It only took about a week to receive the passport from the embassy in L.A. once we had worked through all the requirements (see my other post) http://www.pcgenla.org/

Make sure you make plenty of copies of the all the paperwork or you will going to the copier a lot. Everything we thought we had everything they would ask for a copy of something else. I went down to the first floor of the building the embassy is in because they charged less to make copies than the place on the 5th floor that made copies. I was on a first name basis with those people on the first floor by the time we got done. :P

When I renewed our passports (at the Phil. Embassy in Washington D.C.), they expedited processing because we were from out of town. We submitted our application in the morning and my son got his in the afternoon. There were some complications with mine (because of the name change) so i wasn't able to get mine same day. But if hers is straightforward, she can have it done same day too. I hope she can find a way to get to the consulate in Los Angeles or have someone process it for her there.
