Hi my fellow Canadians. I am here in the US now on my K3 visa and have applied for my employment authorization and my status adjustment.

Back in May I filed for my EI benefits when I left work. Of course I am not receiving any funds as the EI service centre in Canada is waiting to receive my employment authorization here in the states. I am currently receiving EI cards to complete.

My question is when I do receive my employment authorization and send a copy to the EI centre in Canada and start receiving funds, how does this work? For example if I am eligable to receive 50 weeks EI do they start the 50 weeks the date I receive my employment authorization?

Sorry if I am not making any sense.

Thanks

Has your claim been approved? If so, when they sent out your paperwork to you, it should have already said on it what date your claim officially started, and when it ends. My understanding is that you're eligible for so many weeks, so if payments are suspended until you receive your EAD, then those weeks will be tacked on to the end. You should really establish an on-line account so that you can see your information, eligibility dates, when payments are made etc. I've posted the link here for you to sign up and see your on-line status.

not sure exactly about ur situation ( i was cr-1) but the max time one can claim EI in the USA is 36 weeks. Yep shorter than the time 1 can clain in canada. At least that was the case in 2005

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
