Congrats on the Interview date!!

Montreal or Vancouver?

I went though Vancouver- the Interview was easy and painless.

You probably already have the list of things you need to bring with you. Have all your paperwork ready- I had originals and copies of everything. They will look at the originals and keep the copies- Birth Certificate, Marriage, Divorce Certificates, etc.

The man who interviewed me was very nice- he started off asking how we met and kept going from there. It was no different from having a conversation with someone who wants to get to know you better.

Go to the Canada section- many people there have posted on the Interview experience.

Montreal. I'm in Vancouver now for the medical exam. The visa interview is next week. I'm not very good at this forum thing, I've never done it before. Do you know what happens after the interview? When the visa comes, or when I can enter the States again after that, or when I can work?

Congrats on the Interview date!!

For Montreal- they will mail you the Visa and passport. It can take up to 10 days to get it. You will need to bring a postage paid express mail envelope to the Interview. You will know at the Interview if you are approved or denied.

Vancouver was different- you usually pick up your Visa the same day or the next day. There are lots of differences between the Montreal and Vancouver Consulate- so you will get better advice from someone who went though Montreal.

The Visa is a sticker in your passport. Along with the Visa the Consulate will give you a big envelope that you cannot open. It will be opened when you go through the Port of Entry into the US. When you go through US Customs whether at the Airport or Land Border- you give it all to them and they will activate your Visa and you are free to enter the US. It took about 10 minutes at the Airport when mine was activated.

Once in the US- you are a K3 visa right? You will need to file Adjustment of Status. I just filed mine and am still waiting. I can't work yet until I have my EAD approved. EAD (employment authorization document) usually takes 90 days to be approved.

Since you are applying for a K-3 non-immigrant visa, I believe you need to further file for an employment authorization once in the US (EAD I think it's called). . you are allowed to move to the US as soon as you get the visa in the mail (don't forget your Xpress post envelope!!!) and from there you begin another process known as AoS (Adjustment of Status); after which you will obtain your immigrant visa (green card).

Hope this helps, L.

Oh, and :time:, it helps us all.
