Luz,

I think when Gary and myself were coming up, we basically walked everywhere in all kinds of weather, and our parents considered this the norm back then. Sometimes we forget how much the world has changed. (F)

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

In this modern world of instability it's great that he has two people he can rely on. A mother's role may change as kids grow older but they are still very much needed!

My personal take is that it would be okay for a while to wait with him as he has to get used to his surroundings. It's up to you both, of course :)

I just wanted to add really that my generation is the first where our parents have done TOO much for us. Now I am an adult in some respects I am still scrambling to stand on my own two feet. At 23 years old, I don't think that's healthy! My husband is exactly the same. I don't feel that my parents owe me everything like some young people do today but I lack proper motivation that comes from a serious situation

In our situations I think our parents have partly used us as a crutch to feel complete. I know my mum in particular gets lonely and needs to feel needed and was very very upset when I moved away.

I just want to clarify some things here. Luz is the best mom (and wife for that matter) that I have ever had the wonderful luck to have ever encountered. The conversation started because Luz insists upon waiting with Robin at the bus stop. The stop is about 100 yards from our front door. I understand her need to make sure Robin is OK but I also know how kids are. I just want to spare Robin the "moma's boy" comments while he is trying to establish himself in a new school in a new country. We live in a completely safe neighborhood. There is nothing to be afraid of here.

As far as the umbrella goes, well, it's a man thing. :P

That's totally understandable and good thinking, brother.

i also, understand my brother gary point of view, kids can be cruel and tease and torment ...and bully...and i think gary wants to advoid his son getting off on the wrong foot with the kids at his school...especially at age 16, where allot of kids think they are cool and adults..

'Real men' carry umbrellas in NYC, London & Cincinnati. I don't know what you are on about.

I was thinking.. man.. EVERYONE around here in CT use umbrellas... now the men I know won't use my "girly" one (pink), but my hubby has a black one he carries everywhere he goes (in the car).

understood, but shouldnt this be up to robin himself? i mean it is a new country as you say, give Luz some time she will back up a bit the more safe she feels with him being there alone.

This is more or less his request. Luz always has had Robin on a short leash because she has always been a single mom. I must say that Robin has turned out wonderfully. He is hard working, respectful and smart. I just couldn't say too much about how proud I am of him. But as a consequence of her raising him by herself she tends to be over protective. I know it's just her way of doing things but since I came into the picture I have slowly been easing her out of the protective mode and into getting her used to his upcoming manhood and independence. I am taking it slowly and doing my best to understand her feelings.

I think you are being an awesome mom, but you can afford to let him go it alone a bit here. As others have suggested, you could just let him pick out a rain jacket...

As for the umbrella, in the UK a lot of university students absolutely refuse to have them (my buddies included) and it was a badge of (stupid) honor not to have one. Perhaps that had something to do with the fact that getting drenched is a good way to bring you to your senses when you have a hangover...

Anyway, I digress: I think a 16 yr old lad should be allowed to catch the bus himself and doesn't need an escort. It's understandable that you worry about him, and wonderful that you do...but perhaps you can take him out for a soda after school instead? I used to like it when my mom did that.

My aversion to umbrellas comes from my upbringing. I was raised on a farm where a little rain wasn't a problem. It's hard to feed cattle when you have one hand occupied with an umbrella. Just put on a coat and hat and go for it. I guess it's all in what your used to.

I agree with what a lot of others have said. It probably has to do with being in a different culture for school, it's so new for him and you probably feel worried. Any parent would!

But from the pics I've seen, he looks taller and more muscular than you :D and would be able to defend himself better than you would be able to, should anything ever happen at the bus stop. So I do think he should be able to go alone to the stop, because of his age and all. I know you just want the best for him, especially being new here and the "new kid" at school. But I'm sure you will see him fit in well and things will feel normal for him at school very soon if it hasn't already. He will build more independence. I'm sure he'll do fine! :) But he will need to know how to do things on his own.

My parents were up and around when we were teenagers and getting ready to go to school but we usually just ate cereal really fast and did everything for ourselves. It may be a cultural difference or just because it was just you two for awhile.

Well its more of my part to insist to be with him since everything for us is new here..I guess the mother in me always kick in.. I thought it is beneficial for him when I had to make it sure its ok without realize that he is a man now(almost)..in fact he is so excited about his school and classmate. He is happy ..and since the school promise me to pick/drop Robin closer to where we live I will stop to go and wait with him.(I will just wave and blow a kiss lol! :P .)

Thanks all for the kind words and sweet advice. (F)

One more thing, pretty soon we will start to work on our baby Gary's adoption paper.I will get busy to take care of him...yay!

Here 's my baby Gary playing around with us.I miss him so much. :(
