I know this silly thing that my hubby told me to do when I had chigger bites, but it's really stupid. It worked though, it stopped itching.

I'm game for almost anything NEssa...

I'll PM you about it :P

Another thing you can try is a product that contains lidocaine which works as an anesthesic, you won't feel much pain and it helps with the itching.

I'm a little late into this conversation, but since none of the previous methods have worked (attempting to stop the itch itself), then perhaps you might want to attack the inflammation. Areas of the skin (especially those that have been bitten or stung) that are inflamed can lead to a great deal of itching.

So you have two routes:

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) - such as Celebrex which is prescription or Advil and Aleve, which are both over-the-counter.
  • Steroids - I don't mean the type that "pumps you up," but the kind that severely reduces inflammation. There are numerous kinds (depending on whether or not you want to take a pill or use a cream/gel/ointment), but two good ones are Prednisone and Topicort.

With the steroids, you shouldn't be on them for long. In fact, you should only be on them for as long as absolutely necessary and in the case of a cream/gel/ointment, use as little as possible. The reason for this is these types of drugs can have some very serious side-effects, none of which you want. Light usage, however, shouldn't do any harm though.

If none of the above helps, then I don't really know what would work. Maybe some sort of combination of anti-inflammatory and antihistamine medication might do the trick.

Mel got stung on his toe a few days ago. He soaked his toe in Clorox bleach for a few minutes after it happened. He didn't have any swelling or itching- it was like it never happened at all. He swears by it.

Wowzers.. that is unique.. but at this point.. i'll try anything.. would bleach burn your skin?

I've read about putting a cup of bleach in your bathtub (with warm water, of course) and soak for 10 min. Sounds crazy to me, but if you're willing to try anything.. :P

Something else you can try is applying baking soda at the bites.

Have you tried Apple Cider Vinegar? You can use it neat or diluted directly on the skin. You can also add half a cup to a luke warm bath.

Hope the itching stops..... (F)

haven't tried that either.. so glad to have some ideas to try..

The only thing that works for me is to put meat tenderizer on it. BUT YOU HAVE TO GET THE KIND THAT HAS PAPAINE IN IT. Sounds crazy, but it works!!! It's the only thing that keeps my mosquito bites from becoming the size of lemons. And it works on bee/wasp stings as well. My mom got stung by a wasp two weeks ago and we used the meat tenderizer. It's the bomb!!!

One other thing I thought of.... In the UK you can get something called Click Relief. It's a "high voltage/low intensity electric current" which "reduces or inhibits histamine release by the body". (Yes I am quoting from the back of the packet I just found....)

It's basically a little bit like a plastic gun the size of a keyring which you click on the itching part and it gives you a small electric shock. I haven't tried it yet myself, but I have been told that it works really well.

Hope you can buy them where you are....
