Just out of curiosity...do any of you base picking the cake on flavor, or just design? Those cakes look nice, but aren't they covered in marzipan? Although edible, I wouldn't think it would be all that good as a "frosting." I'm a guy though so what do I know?

I agree, taste is more important than presentation. Of the weddings I have attended, most cake winds up in the garbage. People take a bite and "oh that sucks" then throw it away.

Try to go for style and taste, leaning more towards taste. It is food after all.

That was the main reason we went with buttercream! We had a chocolate layer, a raspberry layer, and a swirly layer. We didn't actually get to eat any cake at the reception, but the guests all loved it. It was from our small town bakery that pretty much has a monopoly on all wedding cakes.

See, I'd go for style above taste. 20 years from now, who gives a sh!t how it tasted, but ya still have the piccies ;)

Meanwhile, I fell in love with this cake last year around Feb. Emailed the bakery, and not only was the smallest cake $800, they were booked til mid 08. And that was Feb 06!!!!!!!!!!!

Pix are good Lisa, even 20 years later. Conversely, some of strongest memories of other peoples weddings I have attended, was the crappy tasting cake.

In some cases, however, this was completely overlooked due to the open Bar!!!
