I'm not veggie, but on most days I would prefer them to a meat sausage.

:protest:

Sacrilege!

I know - really good sausages aren't that easy to come by or that cheap. I'm actually not a big pork eater - the quality I get usually doesn't justify the fat content. Tofurky are lower fat and taste good

, what do other veggies eat here when they want gravy

I make my own. I save all my uncooked veggie pieces (broccoli and asparagus stalks, carrots, onions, etc). Throw them in a freezer bag and stick them in the freezer until you are ready to make your stock. Save the liquid from when you have boiled some veggies or potatoes, then add your frozen veggies. Simmer for about an hour to reduce the stock and intensify the flavour. You can add garlic cloves, salt and pepper, a bit of white wine.... whatever you like. Once you get it concentrated to where you like it, strain or remove the veggies and add your thickening agent. Voilà.... vegetable gravy!

Really really missing Scotland and food from the UK atm, but I think it's all in my head. The last time I was pregnant, we were living outside of Glasgow, and I was sick often, and my hubby got me one mint aero a day because it was the only thing I could keep down. I'm missing all manner of things though, from disgustingly rich caramel and fudge parfaits, to the chip shop, to quaivers (which I never liked much lol), scotch eggs, sausage rolls, to breakfast at a little place called Munchies in Paisley...it's really sad, but I am really really missing all of it.

you mean no added corn syrup.

Is there anything in the US that doesn't have this cr@p in it?! I checked the "authentic" Worcestershire sauce (made in the US) and even that had it in - grr!!

We both miss bread...good bread.

Yeah - bread in the US sucks but at least there is a variety so you can change when you get totally sick of one type ;) Also bagels are pretty good :)

You just can't get the right potatoes I find. For some reason America has 1 kind of potato (Russett), whereas UK has about 100.

I've struggled with this too - I make gorgeous wedges back here but there they either go squishy like mash or are too hard and taste raw :(

Luckily we have a decent Indian in town, plus there's Trader Joe's Frozen Garlic and Corriander Naan, which are about the best store bought Naan I've ever had (made in India no less).

Struggle with a good Indian where I am going to live :( Good Thai though so that kinda makes up for it ;)

Found this recipe online. It's not bad.

two parts 40% gin

two parts red vermouth

one part orange Curacao

This makes the "Cheat's Pimms"

Then of course add either fizzy lemonade or ginger ale (usually about one of Pimms to three of mixer)

Oh cool - I am going to have to try that here as well - I always wondered what it was made up of!

Now I do love beans on toast. At least I know I can get proper Heinz beans at the local supermarket :thumbs:

I actually quite like the Bush's Beans with extra cr@p :D Ok so from time to time Heinz will be nice I am sure but while the novelty is there...

really? That is very exciting! We have a lot of great cheese shops around, but I haven't really found one that covers british cheese particularly well (french and italian are well represented). The best one is actually the local Ralphs that has more exotic types like a Windsor Red but only has one kind of cheddar and it's pretty mild.

I am so going to miss my cheese :( My OH always thought I was slightly crazy for my obsessive love of cheeses (not blue cheese though - bleurgh!). The first time he came to the UK we got him trying everything and now he understands - we spend £20 each time he goes back home so he can take some with him. Our local market does marmite cheddar, cheddar and chili etc etc - there are so many and they are all sooo good - I am going to have to find a way to get real cheese... Saying that though if you try and use a good cheddar when making Mexican food it tastes awful - cr@p cheese is good for something!!

Other things I will miss when I move out:

Thai curry paste - am sure we will track it down eventually but as yet havent' found it

Bovril - much nicer than Marmite

Vegetable stock cubes

Colmans mustard (I hate it but my OH loves it)

Decent chocolate (rather than the stuff that tastes like laxative)

I am sure there is more - I'll come have a rant and hunt for advice when I move!!!

Shouldn't be too hard. You don't say where you live, but most places in the USA have asian stores, and other stores will sell Thai paste too. My local supermarket sells "Tiger Tiger" brand curry paste which has a UK address on it in its Thai section!

Bovril - much nicer than Marmite

Yeah, no luck there. Bovril was banned years back after the BSE thing. Even thought its now vegetarian, I've never seen it. Buy a few jars in the UK, that's what I do. A large jar of Bovril lasts for years and never goes off!

Vegetable stock cubes

No chance!

Colmans mustard (I hate it but my OH loves it)

I've found this at most upmarket stores in the USA.

Decent chocolate (rather than the stuff that tastes like laxative)

Avoid Hershey's basically.

No chance!

Ive seen them here in Ralph's or Albertson's I forget which.

I've seen Bovril in our little corner shop's England section (the same place Johnny Rotten buys his Jacobs Cream Crackers and PG Tips)

Which one is this? I need to go rub elbows with him. And maybe Jonesie.

I did put Branston pickle on my cheddar sarnie today. YUM!

Allans on Washington Blvd in Venice. He lives just round the corner (owns much of venice apparently!) - and I've seen him a few times in cafe marguerite, that french place I told you about.

Have you ever heard him when he goes on Jonesie's Jukebox? hilarious...

Jonesie is hilarious. I haven't heard them together tho. I did watch I'm a Celebrity, Get Me out of here with Johnny tho...he's a smart guy.
