Hello,

I have a SSN number from previous times I have been in the US and I was just wondering if anyone knows what documents you need to change the name on your SSN number after you get married. Do they give you a new number or do they just change the name on it?

Thanks:)

You will need a certified copy of your marriage certificate to change the name on your SSN card.

You will not be given a new number, they will just change your name.

Your number will always be the same.

I took my marriage certificate and driver's license when I changed my name, but as fwaguy said, you can download the form from their site - it also describes what documentation you need to make the change.

We had to wait until Claudeth received something official from the USCIS. When she received her EAD she was able to change her name. It took about six weeks to get the new card.

I went to the Social Security in NC last week. They told me (after quite a long time of checking papers and not being sure on what to do) that I need to bring a work permit (EAD) or the Green Card.

Unless as you came on a K1 visa: if your I-94 is within 2 weeks of its expiration date you can do it to because it's considered a "work permit".

So to summarize Photo ID (passport is a good one), previous SS card + K1 I-94/EAD/GC

I'm not following the part I bolded above. What is considered a 'work permit'? An I 94 that is within two weeks of expiring?
