We will be using my mom as joint sponsor. Does she need to supply 3 years or just 1 year of tax returns? And I haven't made any money, so have not filed tax returns. Is it ok if I just state in writing that I have not filed because it is not required because I didn't make any money? Will this be enough for them?

Does anyone know where to find information about poverty level? I know it has to be 125% above but just wondering where you all are finding what poverty level is.

I think 1 year of your mom's tax returns would be fine, but it always seems like a good idea to go the extra mile, so, if possible, get the past 3 years. I am in a very similar situation, so I am eager to see what kind of answers you get regarding your lack of income and how to present it.

Only the 2006 tax returns and W2s and/or 1099s are required. 2005 and 2004 are reported on the form, and it's easy to get the transcripts for those years (www.irs.gov) so why not?

As for you not making any money or filing, you need a statement to that effect and to cite the IRS regulations sections that say that's how it's done. Here's a good link in another forum about it -
