Ok, as I have stated before my wife lost her passport. We know we have to go to Chicago to get it back and we CAN'T get a SSN without it. My questions are;

1.) Why does she need her SSN?

2.) Can she work without one (for the moment)?

Thanks heaps!!!! :blush:

The only reason you may want SSN in the first 75 days after arrival is to deal with banks that want a number to add her to your account, or in some states they insist that both parties signing a marriage license are required to have a SSN, it is also needed to apply for a driving license.

In order to work your wife needs EAD or Green-Card, SSN is NOT work authorization, if wife has work auth (EAD or Green-card) from USCIS the employer can hire but will request the SSN for tax reporting reasons.

EAD or Green-card can be used to get SSN

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

She has her Green Card (sorry, forgot to say that!) and we tried to get her SSN with her green card but they said they needed her passport as well (they were very friendly and tried to find another way and we had copies and things like that). I was told by my friend that she ABSOLUTELY had to have her SSN before she started work.

Thanks again!!

I think she needs the SSN for payroll purposes (companies need it). Have you contacted your local SS office for this?

Do you mean have I contacted them about her working? No I haven't. But I have been there with her trying to get a SSN.

Anyhow, she's getting ready to send some applications in and I just wanted to know if that was going to be a problem considering it would be a while before we could get her passport.
