Hey Flames, I know you posted in regards to it but my searching abilities are feeble. I think that you had said you had checked the SSN box on your application but it never did get processed and you had to go to the local office. I checked the box too, haven't received my SSN and called the number in the info pack they said to call if I hadn't received in within 3 weeks. The lady I talked to said they don't have the ability to access the DHS database to see if my SSN was sent in. She told me to go to the local SSN office and check there or re-apply. I seem to recall you had to do the same thing. Did they give you your number at the local office? Was it in the system or did you just end up re-applying?

I'm hoping that I only have to make one trip down to Devils Lake to get my SSN, apply for my ND driver's license (which they tell me I need a SSN), and register and insure my vehicle.

I think you need to apply at the SSA office like you had never checked that checkbox.

You can try calling the local office first: https://s044a90.ssa.gov/apps6z/FOLO/fo001.jsp

Here's a link to the application page: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ss-5.html (you have to download the PDF and fill it out).

http://www.ssa.gov/online/ find all the SSN info at ssa.gov

I too had checked the box and NO card!!! I just printed out the form (filled it out) and went to my SSN office and just applied like I had never did!! I wasn't in the system! 1 week later my card arrived!! unlike the Cdn one--which is plastic, the USA SSN is on paper!!! I took my birth cert and passport for ID purposes. Went very well. They didnt tell me what my # was, it came in the mail

Man i'm dedicated, here i sit in Victoria BC,lol Wife is sick, so our toursit adventures wil lbe held to a minimum

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Based on these posts when we recently filled out the form I checked No to the SS card question, I figured it will be better for us to just do it on our own than hassling with this.

That's too bad your wife isn't feeling good!

Ok, so if I understand correctly, whether one fills the YES box or not doesn't really matter.... hmm.... so one should go to the local SS office as soon as one gets there????????

You may want to wait until after you get your GC in the mail. If you go too early, you won't show up in S.A.V.E.

NO!!! It takes awhile 10-14 BUSINESS days to get u into the system!! The process starts when u hand over that brown envelope at POE! Sometimes it gets (SSN) to the right people, sometimes it doesn't. So after 10-14 BUSINESS days, no SSN card, then go down to ur local SSN office and enquire and good chance they wont have u in the system, so then with ur already filled out SSN application (u downloaded and filled out prior to going to office) you hand that to them, and a week or so later, it should arrive in the mail!!

Some people do get the SSN card by checking the box, some do not.

I called the 1-800 number they provided but they were no help. They said they didn't have access to the Homeland Security system to see if it was submitted and suggested that I go to the local office to re-apply or maybe they could tell me if it was in the system

so then with ur already filled out SSN application (u downloaded and filled out prior to going to office) you hand that to them, and a week or so later, it should arrive in the mail!!
So I take it, then that it's not like the Canadian SIN system where you to the office, they imput it for you and will give you a paper with you new SIN # on it. Figures, guess I won't be taking care of getting my driver's license today too as they need my SSN.
