Hello there..

I am hoping someone can help me with tax stuff... I am trying to gather documents for the i-864 and I admit that I am completely in the dark about the US tax system. My (US) husband is currently deployed and uncontactable so i am trying to sort this whole mess our from OZ! ;-(

My questions are as follows:

- We ordered transcripts from the past 3 years. For 2 years 2005 and 2006 we have forms 1040, and for 2004 we have 1040A. Is ONE of the 3 forms mentioned in the i-864 sufficient for each year as I already have (1040, 1040A and 1040EZ) or should I have each of these forms for each year?

- In 2004 my hubby was deployed and worked in a tax free zone. For this year the "total income" on his transcript says $0. Instead his income falls under NONTABABLE COMBAT PAY ELECTION. Will they accept this? And do we need a letter explaining this?

-Did anyone send the transcripts for 3 years even though over the poverty line to be on the safe side? Or am I being OTT

Thanks in advance for your replies!

best regards.. :-)

Even tho it's not required I'd send in the 3 years of tax transcripts you got from IRS plus a letter of explanation telling why he only showed Zero for 2004.

Hubby also has to fill out and sign the I-864 tho.

And yes I sent in the last three years of tax transcripts just to be on the safe side.

Just what the above poster says. :)

My husband is active duty as well.... Did you know that the fact that your hubby is active duty means 1) that he only needs 100% of the poverty line not 125% like everyone else. 2) Since he's in the military it's pretty much guaranteed that he has a steady job and is above the threshold (unless he has lots of children to support etc.) Attach a small note mentioning that your DH was in the tax free zone. I guarantee you that they have seen this before, and that you will be just fine.

It sounds like you are well organised, yes, I'd send in three just to be on the safe side, we did.

Congratulations on getting this far, you are definitely on the right track, try not to stress too much.

Lots of love to you while your husband is out of contact.

Oh, hey, since you're Aussie I invite you to introduce yourself in the DOWNUNDER thread that is sticky'd at the top of this forum if you haven't stopped by already! That is where all the Aussies hang out and share news.

Hi, I just looked through my husbands stuff and we've got 1040 for 2005 and 1040A for 2006 (can't find 2004). The forms have pretty much the same information on them so logic suggests that just one from each year will surfice (it did for us).

Also, double check to see whether you have to get these tax forms notorized or not.

Bless you Jezz.. thanks so much for the advise and kind words.. and for going to the trouble of looking through your old documents! You are a star! :star:

Good to know someone else is in the same boat and you have made me feel a whole lot easier about the whole thing. It can be hard at times not to tie yourself up in a knot about all of this!

I actually tried to get onto the Aussie thread but had a bit of a problem getting in with the same user name and password.. should I need to sign in again? I wondered if you would mind just sending me the direct link (to make sure I am in the right place ;-))?

Thanks again Jezz... hope to catch up with you again soon..

Well wishes to you and your hubby :-))

Take care X
