We just sent off our I-130 package. But I want to go ahead and do as much as we can to get a jump start on all the paperwork. Can I go ahead and fill out the ds230? And on that form, can I type some and then handwrite anything else that needs to be filled in? (my husband can't remember some of the dates for schooling and such so he's going to have to find it out, but I'd like to get it printed out with as much info as possible.) Or is this a form they send you and you have to handwrite it all in?

Also, for police checks, can we do this now? Or do I need something from them to be able to get the police check?

Anything else (forms or otherwise) that we can fill out now while we're waiting for this first step to be complete?

Thanks!

Tammy

Yep, you could start the DS-230. Make sure you have the most recent version. Hold on to until the embassy asks for it though.

And yep, you can apply for the police check now as well. I would imagine it's good for quite a while - either six months or a year.

Hi Daisy =)

We just sent in our DS230 and checklist today !!

When you go to Toronto for the interview, once approved they will give you a letter explaining in pretty good detail what will happen next, but ..in the meantime, look over the ds230, if there is any information you need to gather, start doing so now, it will make it easier for when your packet 3 comes.

I personally would suggest that if you are going to need a sponser to help you, start gathering documents now. I have my father and mother helping me to sponser my husband, since all my income is Canadian, and my job will not continue in the States. I would also suggest that if there is anything to help prove your domicile to the States, do it now too. For example (before anyone gets to confused) I have maintained 2 US bank accounts with both my name and husbands name with my parents US address on the account. So...monthly statements go to parents house. I am now having them send my monthly statements back to me , so when it comes time for our Montreal interview, I will some proof that I do intend to return to the States. I also have started to change my address on buisness I have back home, to my parents address(student loan, car insurance, etc ...) Myself personally, would rather make sure I am over prepared than under prepared. Nothing like working and waiting months and months to get the Visa to go home, and then get denied because something is missing or not enough proof

I can tell you that the checklist items that you will need to gather should be pretty much done because of your I-130 documents ( passport, birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce certificate, etc). The only thing we needed to add was the police certificate. All my husband did for his was go to our local police station, with a photocopy of the directions for the police check that came with packet 3. He figured it was better to go in with what exactly was needed than to guess he was getting the right check. The lady there thanked him for bringing it in....she said it makes things much easier. The check only took about 10 min and cost us $45.00CA. Now mind you, if there is anything that comes up on the name check, fingerprints would probably need to be done(Im sure I will be corrected if I am wrong  )

Hi Daisy Lynn,

Your Husband will need the fingerprint version (based on info you entered in another post).

For documents you will need - ie: can start collecting if you don't already have them (Originals, not photocopies unless stated):

Birth Certificate

Court and Prison Records

Deportation Documentation

Marriage Certificate

Marriage Termination Documentation

Military Records

Photocopy of Valid Passport Biographic Data Page

Police Certificate(s)

Margot-Thanks!

Candy-Congrats on getting yours sent off!! I hope it all happens quickly for you!! :D As far as providing domicile in the states, I don't know what to do. I don't have anything going to my mom's house. I used to, but she sent so much back over the years because I wasn't living there, that they don't usually even deliver it anymore. I have 1 bank that I still have there, but it has my current address in Canada on it and I don't think it will even get sent to my mom's if I change the address. What else could I do? Is this a big problem for some, proving domicile?

Speaking of my mom's house. We are using her as a joint sponsor. Even if I'm trying to give her address as domicile, does she still only have to prove income for 2 people (her and my husband) or for my whole family, since we are saying we will be staying with her?

trailmix-ok, I was thinking we needed the fingerprint ones done. Thanks! Someone gave me this link on another thread http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/crimrec/finger2_e.htm Do I just follow that to get the fingerprint check done? Is that all I will need for the police check requirement?

And can I go ahead and print the ds230 off of the net and fill it out that way? How about sending my mom a link for the !-864, so she can go ahead and start filling that out? Or do I need to wait for the packets? Do they have the forms in them? Does it matter if I fill out the ones they send or if I fill them out with downloadable forms? I keep reading about barcodes and cover sheets for the forms. Does this apply to these?

Thanks!

Tammy

It's actually better to download the forms right from the USCIS site since then you'll definitely have the up to date ones.

For your mom's household number, she doesn't have to include you as you're not currently living with her or dependant on her. Does she live alone? If she does not have a husband and has no dependants, then yes, her household number is 2 (herself and the immigrant, your husband). If she's married and has no dependants, then her household number is 3. If any of your siblings still live at home, they only get counted if they're dependant on her - ie, if a sibling is like 19 and earning their own income, they don't have to be counted in the household number if their income isn't being included.

Are you referring to the link I gave about the fingerprint information? That was just how to get the police check with fingerprints. Should I not be going by that? Is there someplace on USCIS that has that information?

Thanks!

Hi, Daisy. Nope, I wasn't referring to the link about the fingerprint info. I was answering your question about whether it's better to download the forms and start now or to wait for forms in a packet from the embassy, and I was just saying it's better to get them direct from the USCIS site anyway since then you know you've got the most current one. Then before submitting anything, you can check the site again to make sure it hasn't been updated since you first downloaded it. :)
