I think what Dev said - their Canadian mature cheddar is probably the best I've been able to find at a decent price. Now if you have a Ralph Fresh Fare nearby (posher than the regular Ralphs) you can sometimes find some really good British cheeses there - I have found Windsor red cheese which is hard to find even in England.

Also - have you checked along the strip on Palm Springs blvd for posh delis? I'm sure there a few places along there selling gourmet foodstuffs to the gays (I am thinking of a place just off the main road near the Hyatt - dunno the name though!)

 Oh grocery shopping is sooo funny - Bless them all but you could swear that it is only women in there talking then you turn around and it is some 200lb guy  Jeremy said he is fine with it all but that being surrounded by grown men who act like 13 year old girls gets a bit annoying after a while

Stater Brothers has some good (expensive) imported cheeses but there just isn't the range there is back home :(

I think it's a losing (expensive) battle with perishables & America. At least not on a regular basis. TJ's has good NZ cheddar too, and less expensive than the English cheddar. You are close to LA & we have a lot of expat shops.

I thought you weren't allowed to ship perishables abroad, hence my earlier comment.

 So you just put "gift" on the customs declaration and didn't mention it being cheese at all? I thought you had to be real specific or they would blow it up thinking it is a bomb or something equally extreme

 To cover the smell?! So you put coffee on the customs form and said it was a gift?! Genius... I think I need to e-mail my mum now... of course... a small package that is so heavy might not pass as coffee....

Oh, and the Mexican grocery store down the street (The Morse Supermercado) carries Heinz Beans, Spaghetti and Salad Cream. Like I said...you can find Brit products in the most unexpected places.

They also have pop in the old skool glass bottles...which Nicky loves too :-)

Ooh - where?!

We have now aquainted ourselves with Trader Joes and World Market. Ignoring even the food issue, World Market has a garden table and chairs that I really like :D We might be investing when our money situation sorts itself out

As for finding things in weird places, I found Stater Brothers does my Yogi Tea which I never in a million years thought I would find out here!!!
