There is a regular grocery store not far from my apartment here in Queens, that has a pretty decent UK foods section. The store manager is Irish and he wanted to bring over a taste from home. They have mince pies and batchelors beans, marmite and even some toiletries and medicines. They also have bangers and frozen fried fish and the prices are not at all as much money as they are on these online sites or in some of these specialty stores.

The thing is that if I look online there is no listing for this store having the section, I just heard through word of mouth, so I think you can find things where you least expect them and not in the most commercial places.

So if anyone lives in the NY Metro area, KeyFood in Floral Park or Stop N Shop in Woodside are treasure troves! And Im the USC but I love all the food too. Even if it is a little pricey I think it makes it more "fun" :star:

Just thought I'd let the Tea drinkers know that I found some Tetley in Wal-Mart today! Well, kind of. It's called Tetley - 'British Blend', so of course, we had to get some to try. It's not quite as good as the Tetley in the UK, but for $2 instead of $8 for 80 bags, it's pretty darn good. So I think I'll survive. ;)

Just thought I'd pass that on. :)

We once bought some tea & biccys in an 'english speciality store' here in central fl.....12BUCKS for a tin of biccys, God knows how much for the tea...I think all in all (bought yorkshire puds mix and a few other things) the bill was like 50 bucks. We were like :o:blink:

Never went back there again!

Yeah, they can be a bit expensive. But if you're missing home and hankering after something, it can be just what you need to help you adjust better. It's just nice sometimes to have a touch of home, no matter what the cost.

Thanks for putting up those British sites for us Frances, much appreciated. Scott gets some British stuff from a local market called Costplus Market which is good in a way but bloody expensive. But as for yorkshire puddings, I can make that myself from a recipe book I have which is a British recipe book too :) So mostly all stuff I will be able to make myself. But it's the kids I'm more worried about.

Every now and then I'll treat myself and get a Bounty from World Market...yummy!!! It's usually eaten by the time I walk to the car :D

A lot of the grocery stores have an International Aisle too, and you can get some good stuff there.

My tastes have changed somewhat since I got here. I don't care for regular 'british' tea now, I'm drinking Green tea with jasmine (v good indeed...lots of nice things in it). I also eat far less of the stodgy stuff I used to eat in the UK. I have far more varied tastes now, which is very cool.

I also am perfectly happy with a nice bar of Ghiradelli or Scharffen Berger chocolate. I'll go to the World Market every once in a while and get myself a Toffee Crisp or a Lion Bar though.

I'm a big big fan of Trader Joe's - nice cheeses, good bread, some fairly decent indian stuff (not the greatest though)

And huzzah to the Crown and Anchor in Vegas. I did their drinking challenge once and introduced my friends to The Arrogant #######. No, not my husband, but a decent beer from Stone Brewery.

I'm not a beer drinker at all, but my husband has been more than pleased to find there are many great micro-brewery beers to satisfy his discriminating palate. The problem is that a lot of times non-USC'ers only get the opportunity to drink the mass produced, big named American beers and get completely put off them, and probably understandably so...but if you are a beer drinker, there is a lot to be found out there. I THINK my husband has tried something from Stone Brewery, not sure though. Whatever...he's happy discovering all these new beers and not getting stuck in the "oh there is nothing decent to drink in the U.S." mindset.

twinkies? are you kidding? those things would survive a nuclear holocaust! Yuck, do yourself and your body a favor and never allow one near your mouth again.

Have an In N Out burger...granted it's a burger, but at least it has some fresh ingredients.

We have got several really good micro breweries in the area and the beer is really good. Mind you I prefer their wheat beers to the english style beers, but what the heck!

No one says you have to buy plastic wrapped, pasteurized stuff. I don't know about anyone else, but I get Danish Havarti, English wensleydale, Greek halloumi, and much much more...at my grocery stores... and oh, yes, REAL Italian mozzarella. ;)
