And immigration policy is not about turning the USA into a carbon copy of Latin America.

No one said it is. It just would be really, really nice if people didn't talk about immigration policy as if that were the only concern. Like they'd be okay with it if the illegal immigrants were all white Canadians. Or that everyone here illegally jumped the border, or is in a Hispanic gang. Or that Hispanic is the same as Mexican. Or refrained from talking about preserving white America. Listen to yourselves for crying out loud. You sound like crazy people wanting to strip freedoms from all Americans, having to prove your citizenship on demand without probable cause so you're not 'overrun' by a 'horde.'

I don't think Tancredo, who wants to freeze legal immigration, is worried about border security as much as he is worried about foreigners. I think that the people he appeals to are more likely to worry about foreigners than whether they have a valid I-94, or he wouldn't be talking about freezing legal immigration.

I don't think a lot of people here are supporting illegal immigration...

like caladan said.. what happens when a cop does pull someone over without the proper ID.. what does the cop do with the person??

Why do I think the answer to that is something along the lines of 'make it a criminal offense to not carry valid identification'.

Hmmm... Going back to Newark I wonder what cutting off Federal funding will do to its law enforcement efforts...

Does that mean their police departments are basically federally funded?

I think it's common sense. If you are a visitor you should carry your passport everywhere. Any lawful or permanent residents should carry their green card at all times.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Nah, but if you pull funding for federal programs from a city that's struggling, you get more crime, not less.

It means cutting off funding (from any source) probably wouldn't help ;)

And if you don't then.... what...?

Should it be a crime to not carry valid ID?

Since 80+% of illegal aliens are Hispanic, it is very easy to see that Hispanics are going to be the most affected by any crackdown on illegal aliens. And immigration policy is not about turning the USA into a carbon copy of Latin America. For some on the Left it is their Holy Grail and cause celebre', but I don't believe a vast majority of Americans want it. Whether that appeals to "the base" of one party or the other is irrelevant. It's about the direction that Americans want for our country.

Exactly..

Not a crime but it should be required by anyone who is not a citizen. Especially by someone who is visiting.

And if they don't then how do you tell if they are visiting or resident?

What is the basis for pursuing 'further investigations' on whether the person is here legally or not?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

i have a great idea... why don't they start implanting an ID chip in our brains, that the police or whomever would have to scan in order to check our status... :P

Well if paper passports are so 'yesterday'....

Hell if they can do it for our cats and dogs, then can do it for us
