don't lose it or have someone take you to work. why do people think they can drive without having it? hell i learned to have it with me when operating a vehicle at 17 and always have.

Because you're still a licenced driver even if you don't have a plastic card to prove it.

Just like you're still a U.S. citizen, even if you don't always have your U.S. passport handy to prove it.

P.S. You can drive without a licence in the UK - if you're stopped, you have 14 days to produce your

full driver's licence to a police station. (Boo-Yah - it is the same in Australia.)

yep I know that. But Illegal immigrants have an extremely tough time getting around in AUS. Whereas in the US you have some cities which are bending over backwards fort them. If illegal immigration was such a big issue in Australia and you had 3 kids slaughtered like that Australians would have protested and demanded change.

Whereas in the US some people are too worried about themselves and their 'perceived' rights. Get over that ###### and move into the 21 century..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

You have to ask everyone, or its discrimination.

Well that attitude is wrong and is the cause of so many problems in the US. The we better not target the real issue otherwise it will be viewed as discrimination or racism. Therefore valuable time and money is wasted on appeasement BS.

Illegal immigrants are the problem. Therefore all immigrants will need to be scrutinized. This just seems to be a no brainer overseas. The US needs to target the cause and problem, rather than worrying about what everyone else thinks.

As Pedroh pointed out previously, latino USC's would likely be targetted as well.

We live in an all-inclusive society, which includes people of many ethnic origins. You can't just excise one large portion of it (USC's of hispanic descent) just because their opinions are inconvenient to your idea of a 'common good', or that they should accept and tolerate discrimination. Moreover its easy to say when you're not the target of such policies...

and who is to blame for that? The US government. The illegal immigrants are solely responsible for legal latino's being targeted.

Really?

There's a "huge culture" of working illegally, says Conor McCormick, 33, who spent two years doing just that after his working holiday visa expired in 1997.

Enjoying himself too much to go back to his native Northern Ireland, he falsely declared himself a resident on his new tax form and continued doing agency work and a bar job. When his employers asked for his new visa, he just made excuses.

"I was surprised how easy it was, it was so simple. What I did fooled everyone. I had become a resident and no-one questioned that at all."

There were nervous moments, like being interviewed by police as witness to a fight in the pub or when friends of his were deported for staying illegally. And of course, when he finally decided to leave the country.

A few days before his flight home, Conor declared himself to the Darwin authorities, who interviewed him for 90 minutes. They then issued a new short-stay visa for Conor to leave the country and gave him a three-year ban.

"The questioning was far from hostile, they gave me a cup of tea and asked me why I overstayed. I told them I had met someone, who is now my wife, and didn't want to go back. They asked me where I worked but never asked for names or addresses."

Eighteen months after leaving Australia, Conor returned, halfway through his ban. He says they let him in because he had applied for residency. Now he's an Australian citizen.

Although his method for staying on even fooled the tax office, most illegal workers get paid in cash.

Jane, now a 32-year-old teacher in the UK, was forced to leave Australia due to a bereavement, so by the time she returned, her working visa had expired and the authorities refused to extend it.

"I got cash-in-hand jobs, in a restaurant, fast food, a sandwich shop. They didn't know I didn't have a working visa but they didn't ask either.

"I knew not to go to the larger companies in the city centre, where they do check, so I went to the corner shops near where I lived.

Scott is right. It meant more along the lines of "for example".

Sure. But those legal latino USCs are still legal USCs and surely have a reasonable expectation to be treated equally, no?

I would like to see them apply for any government service or try to use medicare. Plus the fact that they will probably never able to get a visa to travel to AUS once they leave.

Illegal immigration is not a huge problem in AUS. 55,000 compared to 12,000,000. In America it is almost an epidemic. So trying to compare the two is ridiculous.

Plus you seem to missed the following little bit of information:

The report says: "Many people who are recorded as overstayers are simply extending their stay in Australia by a few days or weeks, and leave of their own accord in a short period."

Interesting comment:

Hi I am a newly arrived "Pom" permanent resident who arrived in OZ just under 18 months ago. The immigration system here is superb. Unlike the UK, Australia knows what it wants for its labour market and to live on its shores. It is in the position where it can select skilled workers with proven experience in their fields. The selection process is very stringent, involving police checks, medical tests and skills assessments. I can't believe that the Oz government knowingly "tolerates" any overstayers. I say one thing to the overstayers ... Go home and come here legally!! Why ? Because the peace of mind that being a permanent resident brings adds to the quality of the life and makes the sky even bluer.

So by asking them for ID they are not being treated equally?

By asking some, but not others on the basis of race is not being treated equally. If you want to treat everyone equally, you ask everyone if they are a citizen or legal resident.

So by asking them for ID they are not being treated equally?

Not if they're being singled out for the treatment more than everyone else.

I would like to see them apply for any government service or try to use medicare. Plus the fact that they will probably never able to get a visa to travel to AUS once they leave.

That one guy did. Was able to come back in the middle of a 3 year ban. Australia also doesn't have a large pool of dirt-poor people living on its doorstep.

That is hypothetical assumption anyway. That they will only target Latinos.

because you cannot simply walk into the Australia and setup shop. First of all if the unions alone found out that a construction business was using illegal immigrants they would be all over the company.

Whereas in the US people like yourself, who go on and on about poverty, don't seem to care that they are taking jobs from Americans living in poverty. And are more worried about someone like Pedroh being asked to produce ID. The whole point of ID cards or asking for residency status is to put the squeeze on illegal immigrants. To send out the message that the US is no longer open for business for illegal immigrants. It has absolutely nothing to do with discriminating against Latinos.

But they don't toss you in jail for not having it with you. They either fine you, or require you to show your ID at the police station or courthouse within a certain amount of days.

There is a huuuuuuuuuge difference between forgetting your license to being in a country illegally. I honestly cannot comprehend how people do not see the problem with allowing someone unidentified and with an unknown history to freely roam in a nation, in their own back yard, as this person sees fit.

How many people need to be killed or be a victim of violence before people say enough is enough??

How many jobs must they take before people say enough is enough?

perhaps they should. then they can sort out who's legal and who's not. :)
