You're the one that's saying 'an accent is probable cause.' That phrase has a specific meaning, which is why we're taking you to say, "If the police hear you have an accent they have a right to demand your ID because they have a reason to suspect you of a crime."

You guys have an uncanny talent of not listening to what someone is saying. If someone is pulled over for XYZ, the police should have a right to ask for a person residency status period. I am not saying they should pull people over based on their accents or looks..

They can, but what does it matter? They cant do anything about it anyway. Only the ICE can.

In order for anything to happen ICE needs to take it from there, but generally they don't because they don't have enough money. And the person ends up free again anyway, with or without a national ID card.

Well yeah. You would think that that is a no brainer.. If someone tries to buy a house, car, open a bank account, send their child to school, rent, get a drivers license, credit card, work, use any government services etc they should be asked to provide appropriate ID. It's not just a matter of law enforcement. If someone is pulled over and the police have probable cause, IE EG a freakin accent, they should be permitted to ask for further residency verification.

I am sure the police have better things to do than pull over every latino to check their status.

i.e. means 'that is'.

Because you were speeding, they are permitted to ask for your driving identification (but you wouldn't have to volunteer your green card.) Again, specific occasion of wrongdoing. Very different from the cop stopping you on the street while you are doing nothing wrong -- not even speaking -- and demanding your ID because he thinks you have an accent.

Speeding is illegal. Having an accent isn't. Different situations.

and when has a cop stopped someone in a street and asked them to produce ID based on their accent. Nonetheless, someone here legally in such an extreme situation would simple show their ID card and be sent off.

Are you going to require all police to carry verification devices to check if the card isn't fake? How would a cop know if the real card wasn't fraudulently acquired.

yes. Why not? Can you easily fake the new green cards??

You can fake anything with enough time, and money and the right connections. Media companies think DRM will stop piracy, but has it?

one solution to end the pulling over of people and asking for id to verify their status is to stop issuing driver's licenses to illegals along with an automatic trip to jail for not having a license for everyone. now that they are in jail, they will have to prove their identity and therefore their status......

What if someone steals your wallet? At least here in NY it takes 2-3 weeks to get a new license -

how are you supposed to drive to work in the meantime?

What if you lose it or accidentally leave it at home? Automatic trip to jail?

Instead of automatically accusing someone of saying something you don't like, why not ask them to clarify what they meant? Rather than trying to corner them off.

If the police pulled someone over for XYZ and they had an accent they should be allowed to ask for their residency status; if they believed that their status was questionable. For example, not having a drivers licence on them. As is the case in numerous other developed nations. It is common sense really. Clearly someone with an accent was not born in a nation therefore will be further scrutinized than someone else.. Especially in a country like america where illegal immigration is such a huge problem.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

You have to ask everyone, or its discrimination.

You have to ask everyone, or its discrimination.

Well that attitude is wrong and is the cause of so many problems in the US. The we better not target the real issue otherwise it will be viewed as discrimination or racism. Therefore valuable time and money is wasted on appeasement BS.

Illegal immigrants are the problem. Therefore all immigrants will need to be scrutinized. This just seems to be a no brainer overseas. The US needs to target the cause and problem, rather than worrying about what everyone else thinks.

You're still saying that an accent is 'just cause'. What else would make their status questionable in your view - unfashionable clothes? Not having a driver's license on you would get you a ticket.

But thats by the by - because there's still this question, left unanswered.

I think the whole point of the card is for authorities to be able to quickly verify someone's status.

Ok, the traffic cop who stopped you for speeding has identified you as an illegal alien. What next?

The ID card by itself - does nothing to address the enforcement issue. Its useless without increased financing and reform of existing agencies and policies.

Because you're still a licenced driver even if you don't have a plastic card to prove it.

Just like you're still a U.S. citizen, even if you don't always have your U.S. passport handy to prove it.

P.S. You can drive without a licence in the UK - if you're stopped, you have 14 days to produce your

full driver's licence to a police station. (Boo-Yah - it is the same in Australia.)

To be honest it does not matter what else. You are either here legally or you are not period.. Anyone residing in the country from abroad should be asked and able to produce evidence of their permission to live here..

As Pedroh pointed out previously, latino USC's would likely be targetted as well.

We live in an all-inclusive society, which includes people of many ethnic origins. You can't just excise one large portion of it (USC's of hispanic descent) just because their opinions are inconvenient to your idea of a 'common good', or that they should accept and tolerate discrimination. Moreover its easy to say when you're not the target of such policies...
