71% Favor Requiring Foreign Visitors to Carry Universal ID Card

Fifty-eight percent (58%) of voters nationwide favor cutting off federal funds for “sanctuary cities” that offer protection to illegal immigrants. A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that just 29% are opposed. Republican Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney proposed such a plan earlier this week.

By a 71% to 16% margin, voters also favor a proposal that would require all foreign visitors to carry a universal identification card as proposed by another GOP Presidential hopeful, Rudy Giuliani. Seventy-four percent (74%) also favor the creation and funding of a central database to track all foreign visitors in the United States.

By a 56% to 31% margin, voters want the government to continue building a fence along the Mexican border.

Immigration has already played an important role in Election 2008 by severely damaging the campaign of Arizona Senator John McCain. McCain aligned himself with President Bush and strongly backed the unpopular Senate immigration bill debated in June. Eventually, the President, McCain, and the Senate surrendered to the American people and shelved the “comprehensive” reform plan.

Now, Romney and Giuliani are trading barbs on the issue and hoping to gain further advantage in the race for the Republican Presidential nomination. Romney leads in polling for the New Hampshire Primary while Giuliani leads in the national polls and in Florida.

A quick look at the opinions of Republican voters makes it easy to understand why Romney and Giuliani are so eager to engage on this issue. Seventy-three percent (73%) of GOP voters favor cutting off funds for sanctuary cities and 75% want the government to keep building the border fence. Eighty-one percent (81%) favor a universal identification card for foreign visitors and 88% of the GOP faithful support a central database to track all foreign visitors.

By a 58% to 33% margin, Republican voters also agree with Giuliani’s assertion that it’s possible to end illegal immigration. Democrats and unaffiliated voters are evenly divided on that question.

A recent survey found that 79% of voters favor strict measures requiring employers to fire workers who provide false identification documents. Seventy-four percent (74%) also believe that proper identification should be required for anyone to rent an apartment.

Having properly secured borders is something that had to be done years ago and it still has to be done. Would a fence do it? Try a modern age Chinese/Berlin Wall  Excellent idea - ask all republicans who support this idea to drive by and bring a few big stones with them. Then have boy-scouts put the wall together, it could be a national project :P

Now the tracking systems... that reminds me of a big brother. First you implement it for foreigners, then for criminals and then for citizens... slippery road that is.

I'm trying to figure out how cutting off funding would work:

"You have illegals in your city and you don't deport them!"

"We can't deport them. That's not our jurisdiction."

"We will cut your funding if you don't deport them."

"THAT ISN'T OUR JURISDICTION."

"Well, arrest them at least."

"And then what? We'll let them go because THIS IS ICE'S job."

Foreign visitors are already required to have ID and/or passports and/or valid I-94. Proper identification is required to rent an apartment; they run a credit check based on a social security number. Thing is, all you need is one legal person renting and the rest as 'approved occupants.' (Which is actually how I have C. on my lease since he didn't have a SSN yet when we needed to renew it.)

Oh, and P.S.: if there were a law requiring foreign visitors to carry an ID at all times ("like your green card or passport?" "shhh, don't make sense") it would just be an extra step for legal immigrants that illegal visitors would ignore.

All this poll shows is that most Americans have NO idea how immigration works. C.'s a citizen because we got married, right?

 I'll bet a great majority of Americans if polled, believe that is true.

"In a new poll, 71% of Americans favor eliminating the fiance visa, which allows anyone in the U.S. to bring their significant other to America to be married.

Jane Doe of Smallville, Kansas remarked, "It just seems really wrong that a guy can bring over some mail order bride he's never met, marry her and then she becomes automatically a citizen! We have too many people here already. Plus, terrorists could use it because if you're engaged to someone they just let you in without a background check.

"Plus, I really think it's disgusting how the government pops into people's bedrooms to make sure they're having sex. Our government shouldn't be in the business of being peeping toms."

Laugh all you want. Enforcement and cracking down on the gatecrashers is what America wants. Take a look at any days news. You will see local and state laws popping up that reflects these polls. You wait, next year the elections will not be about Iraq or the economy. It will be about immigration.

A card that shows the legal status of the person. Like a green card but for every alien whether they are a LPR or not. I like the idea. No card, out you go! It's something that any law enforcement officer can ask for when wondering about the status of someone the encounter for another reason.
