i think people who earn their money fair and square, don't need to justify anyone if they wanna send money overseas... it's their freakin money ffs.. they'll know how to spend it..

Yep 100% agree but this is a negative for the American economy. Thus a negative for the American people. Never said that people should not send any money overseas but there are economic repercussions for Americans with doing so. In the past people have not been able to send money overseas so easily..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

There are things that have a much greater impact on the American economy than the 40 billion sent home by immigrants. Why are you not outraged by them? How much do we spend on imports every year? Probably several hundred billion. Those are manufacturing jobs that could have been in America. Why are you not outraged over that?

I am outraged by the amount of money we spend on cheap shoddy plastic Chinese #######

(and increasingly poisonous food and everything else) and try not to buy anything made in China.

I am. Ultimately it is up to Americans to buy products that are made in America and shun any company that moves overseas for the quick $$$$.

Offshore manufacturing is actually good for the economy, but not necessarily for those low skilled workers who's jobs will be replaced.

Also creating jobs overseas gives people less incentive to come here for work, we bring it to them.

Everyone seems to act as if Americans are these super rich people who have so much money to throw overseas. While there are a lot of rich people, the average Joe is actually not that well off at all; in comparison to average Joe of other developed nations.

While buying cheap ####### from China has greatly helped the Chinese, well the growing rich Chinese, it has come at a great expense to the American economy. Which is pretty much now owned by the Chinese government. It does not take a genius to realize minimum paid workers are not happy and that this constant influx of workers has suppressed wages in the US. Or that an economy cannot boom on consumer credit and property investments alone..

Overseas remittances are helping to level the global economic "playing field" and I'm very happy to hear about it.

Frugality might mean that there are some resources left for our great-great-grandchildren.

We try to be as frugal as possible and send what we can back to my in-laws.

When the US govt spends hundreds of billions waging a pointless war in Iraq, I don't feel any particular concern about the effect of our frugality and overseas remittances on the US economy.

I would prefer not to buy goods from China because my impression is that their environmental protection laws are weak, but it is difficult to find certain items that are NOT made in China. In my husband's country, there is an abundance of cheap Chinese cr@p, and American-made goods are considered the gold standard for quality. Imagine his surprise when he arrived in the US to find there are so few American-made goods here... just more cheap Chinese cr@p.

But really, at least the money is mostly going to help poor and disadvantaged people around the world. We have spend 400 billion in Iraq, and what good has that done?

Amen to that.
