What are you teaching?

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

hi all,

haven't arrived yet - probably won't for at least six months - but have been trying to do my research for when I marry my fiancé and settle with him in the suburbs of Houston... I have twelve years of teaching experience, in both primary and secondary, but have been working out of the field for just over a year (I have two part-time jobs: one's in education for a charity, and the other is building management)

I'm pretty open to whatever employment seems to present itself once I get there, but it seems to make sense to prepare to go back to the field in which I have most experience and expertise (specially as I've read there'll be a teacher shortage across Texas next year)

I have a Bachelor of Arts (majors English Lit and German) from the University of Sydney, and a Diploma of Education from the same place... have taught ten years in Australia and two in the UK; can teach English Lit and German, and have done supply for a couple of years so have experience teaching most other subjects too!

so: anyone else ever gone through the process of getting foreign certification verified, and sat for the tests you apparently have to do if you want to teach in the state of Texas? any advice for a total n00b? many thanks in advance for any assistance :)

In order to be accredited to teach in the state of Texas, you must have a certificate. In your case, as you have a specific teaching diploma, you may look first into having your diploma translated to see what that equals to in the US. Once that is done, if your foreign diploma qualifies, you can just take the teaching certification test, and apply with any of the school districts in Houston (you have several big ones to choose from, Houston Independent School District, Alief ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Katy ISD, Spring ISD, Clear Lake ISD....just to name a few).

If your diploma does not qualify, then you can look into any of the Alternative Certification Programs. These are designed for people who hold the equivalent of a bachelor's degree or if their BA isin something other than teaching. In Houston, you can look into the Houston Community College system, as they offer one such program for alternative certificaiton. Just do a search for Alternative Teaching Certification, and Houston. The alternative certification offers weekend courses, and once complete it offers job placement and the fees for the course come out of your first year's teacher's salary. (This is financial aid, if you are not aple to pay for the course upfront.)

In the meantime, ritz is right....once you have your EAD, you should go to any of the school districts in your area, and apply to be a substitute teacher, which will give you valuable experience, allow you to network and put $$ in your pocket. Many years ago when I did it, they were paying $100/day of substitute teaching. No benefits, but its not bad for part time work. :)

Good luck!
