* The CAGE questionnaire, named for its four questions, is one such example that may be used to screen patients quickly in a doctor's office.

Two "yes" responses indicate that the respondent should be investigated further. The questionnaire asks the following questions:

1. Have you ever felt you needed to Cut down on your drinking?

2. Have people Annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?

3. Have you ever felt Guilty about drinking?

4. Have you ever felt you needed a drink first thing in the morning (Eye-opener) to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?[6][7]

The CAGE questionnaire, among others, has been extensively validated for use in identifying alcoholism. It is not valid for diagnosis of other substance use disorders, although somewhat modified versions of the CAGE are frequently implemented for such a purpose.

You see that person only once a week, on sunday afternoon, and he/she has a bad alcohol breath and a terrible headache and he/she is being rude with you. The rest of the time you hear him/her getting back from the bar around 2-3 am drunk, and he/she leaves back to go at work at 7 am, and tehre is a good chance he/she doesnt take a shower for several days and get mixed up using your toothbrush instead of his... :dead:

(just my childhood memories from my dad, I know its not everybody  )

hmmmmmm

Do they have mood swings?

Do they drink every night?

Have they ever gone out to dinner and not had an alcoholic drink?

There used to be 20 questions but that's really for the person, not for someone who is trying to figure out if the person is an alcoholic.

All I know is if someone is an alcoholic you cannot do anything whatsoever to get them to stop drinking. They have to do this for themselves. All you can do is not tolerate any inacceptable behavior and live your life to the best of your ability without getting sucked into their everending dramatic situations that always come about from their drinking. Alanon is a pretty good resource for those with relatives, friends, parents, kids, etc. who are alcoholics. I used to go regularly until my life got busy and it did help a lot. I can remember the first time I went to a meeting all I did was cry out of relief of knowing that I was not alone and I did not have to carry this heavy burden of a secret with me anymore.

Hope that helps. Probably more than you wanted to know. lol.

When their drinking gets out of hand, meaning they tend to drink on a daily basis, drinking to get drunk, pass out, wake up and resume drinking. They will have a million excuses for why they drink, blame others for their problems and weaknesses, have memory loss, loss of appetite , withdrawl from friends and family, sometimes become irrational and combative, and I think the list goes on. Later, they may get blackouts and not remember what they did or said, where and how they got to such and such place, and get the shakes and sweats. They harbour a lot of guilt and shame, thus thinking that drinking more will make them forget and suppress these feelings. Alcohol acts as a depressant.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Not all alcoholics drink to get rat arsed. You'll often have the ones who go out to work everyday and hold down a good job. They don't drink during the day, nor do they feel the need to.

However, once they get home they will start on the wine, or a lighter beer and solidly drink through out the evening. By the time the evening is over they may have gotten through a good couple of bottles of wine yet don't seem particularly plastered.

There are many types of alcoholic, not all smell of alcohol, not all look like wrecks, not all are unable to hold down jobs...

Besides the frequency and amount, I'd also consider the reason for drinking

I think if a person uses alcohol for support, he/she has a problem

ie: needs alcohol to face a social situation, can't relax without it...even makes changes in his/her daily routine around their drinking time...etc

edit to add: Uses alcohol to avoid responsability for his/her own actions
