Quick question that I believe I already know the answer to, but just making double sure. If we get approved at my interview in May and if they stamp my passport, are we immediately allowed to cross the Canadian border to go visit my family? If they approve us, are we allowed to ask for a stamp if it does not seem as though they were going to provide one? Thank you for your help!

If you get the I-551 stamp in your passport, you can travel immediately after that with no problems.

My daughter just had her AOS interview on Feb. 22nd and they told us they don't stamp the passports anymore because the GC is processed so quickly now. They told us 7 to 10 days, but her GC arrived 12 days after her interview.

I got my passport stamped at my interview in Boston... lucky as my greencard got lost in the mail....

That was back in November 2005 and I am still waiting for a new greencard...

I would ask about the stamp if they dont do it automatically.... tell them you hope to travel to Canada in the next day or two....

Aye, I agree. My AOS approval was briefly deferred, and we were told that once we got the approval notice, we could come back to the office (through an INFOPASS appointment) to get the stamp, if we wanted to. Seeing as we knew that at that point TSC was sending out green cards after 3 weeks, we held off on that.

I intend to do the exact same thing at my interview at the end of the month, asking for the stamp. I live within a decent range of southern Ontario and I've wanted to go back 'home' to Canada (though I'm from BC) for a long, long while. It's just nice to have the security of a stamp. :)

YES, YOU CAN TRAVEL WITH THE STAMP AND YOU SHOULD REQUEST IT!!

at our interview i asked for the officer to stamp my husband's passport because he clearly wasn't planning on it giving it to us. he said "we don't really do that anymore... do you really need it? i mean it's only good for 1 month." i said that yes, we would really like it if it was possible. so he gave it to us.

we went to mexico this weekend and my husband didn't have any problems crossing the border. he was very happy to be a free man again!

good luck!
