Oh my...

Instead of blaming the dog, blame the owner, and the fools who breed haphazardly in their basements with no regard for life and no clue about genetics...

First off, I do agree that behaviour is breed specific, and if there is an issue of inbreeding, (which is common in backyard breeders), it's bound to happen.

These fools breed them within the family line and the result are curs-which SHOULD be put down, as behaviourally are unsound, and genetically unsound. These backyard breeders are idiots, and they should be put down as well.

Secondly, poorly bred Pits generally end up in the hands of the wrong folks-who bring out the worst in the dog by "training" it through violence... It's horrible. I tried to save one a few years back, but to no avail. I ended up having to put her down as she was so aggressive. I was even afraid of her, and I have 15 years of experience with many breeds.

I currently have 5 in my house. A Jack Russell, a Doberman, a Boxer, a Husky and a Staffy. (The Boxer and Dobie are my ex-husband's that I am fostering until they get acclimated to his new house) Do they all get along? Not all the time. But they do understand that I lead the pack.

A properly bred Pit will not behave in this way. ANY dog regardless of breed should be put down if it behaves aggressively. I would not hesitate to put ANY of mine down if the posed a danger to my family or anyone else's family.

I am truly sorry that happened to you. The dog should be put down, as it is a danger to society. The owner should be put down as well. It is a sad state of affairs that this problem will keep going on and on. In as much as I do love the breed-a breed ban should be imposed. It's the only way to cut down on incidents such as this...

i have a nephew who was attacked in his own yard by a pit bull... the owners of the dog let him just roam loose in the neighborhood... my sister and her family live way out in the country... and she had called animal services before and was told that they could not do anything about picking up the dog because they only worked within the city... but, that my sister could BRING THE DOG IN TO THE POUND AND PAY TO HAVE IT CAGED THERE... my sister said nope... not gonna do that...

so when the dog attacked my nephew... my bro-in-law was home at the time... and he acted quickly... and shot the dog...

the owners even tried to file some kind of suit against him for animal cruelty... when it went to court, my bro-in-law and other members of the community vouched that they owners never tied or fenced the dog up... and that the dog would attack with no reason... judge throwed the case out because he said that my bro-in-law was protecting his family...

i agree with rich... i would have shot that dog!

Sorry your dog got chewed up, but do you think that a German Shepard or Collie or whatever other breed of dog wouldn't have got into a fight with your dog?

Well, that's the 60,000 dollar question. Considering how the fight got started, I am not sure. The dog owner came to our door, Jerry went out, and at that point the two dogs were staring each other down and growling. The dog owner said to Jerry "will your dog come if you call to him?". Jerry said he thought so and called to Moses. He turned his head for a second in response to Jerry's voice, and that is when the other dog pounced.

This wasn't a playful tussle over a ball or a toy, the dog was going for Moses' throat, and latched on hard. The attack lasted a good ten minutes, easy, and like I said before, if we hadn't dragged him off with a steel reinforced cable around its neck, I am sure Moses would be dead. It was scary to watch.

Jerry just came in from looking at the fence -- the dog owner claimed last night that Moses wriggled under our fence chasing a neighbourhood cat, then both dogs came back under the fence and ended up in our yard. I had seen their dog digging around the fence last week, and Moses isn't a digger. Upon inspection just now, we found a dead cat in the corner of the yard, and the fence is intact -- no gaps or evidence that the dogs went under the fence. our theory is that the other dog jumped the fence after the cat, killed it, and then went after Moses when he had the chance, still in "kill mode".

Like I said, I am sure that there are nice pit bulls out there, but this attack just adds to the reputation of the breed, making the "nice" ones few and far between.

You should have shot the dog.

Well, after breaking the oak walking stick on its back (Jerry hit the dog hard at least 10 times), Jerry was yelling that he wished he had one. ;)

god forbid it's irresponsible ownership that fosters this type of behavior...nope, they are just evil dogs...wipe 'em all out.

Damn straight, kill 'em all.

and might as well do the owners too

Don't you have a leash law there? We do here in our town. Your dog can not be outside without a leash unless it is fenced in.

and before anyone rashly says all pit bulls should be put down, think about the mutts and the other breeds that just randomly attack anyone and anything. The family pet that goes crazy one day and attacks the kid. It could be any breed.

The only thing that makes pit bulls dangerous is that they won't let go once they bite. Incidentally, the German Sheppard has a more forceful bite (pounds per square inch) than a pit bull.

This is negligence causing property damage or animal cruelty. They should have been charged. Sounds like they are trying to pin this on Moses and not taking full responsibility. I wouldn't be surprised if they decided not to pay the vet bills.

Pit bulls are easily trained. That is why they have the reputation they have. Bad people train them to have bad behaviour. Same thing with german shepherds.

Don't you have a leash law there? We do here in our town. Your dog can not be outside without a leash unless it is fenced in.

Our dog is completely fenced in, with a high reinforced metal fence. If we go for walks, he's on a leash. the dog in question is in a yard that faces on the east side (if you are looking at it from our patio door). As far as I can tell, he's fenced in as well. There are a lot of dogs in this neighbourhood, and they don't get loose very often.

and before anyone rashly says all pit bulls should be put down, think about the mutts and the other breeds that just randomly attack anyone and anything. The family pet that goes crazy one day and attacks the kid. It could be any breed.

I know you are not directing this at me personally, but I want the record to show that my problem is with the fact that this dog has already killed another dog (told to us directly by the daughter of the dog owner, and she stated it at least 3 times). I could care less what breed it is -- if it has a history of violence, especially if it's known to be a killer, I don't want it near me, near the kids in the neighbourhood, or near the two kids I have seen play in the same yard.

This is negligence causing property damage or animal cruelty. They should have been charged. Sounds like they are trying to pin this on Moses and not taking full responsibility. I wouldn't be surprised if they decided not to pay the vet bills.

The daughter of the owner was very apologetic -- she even was trying to climb over the fence to get Cain (nice name, oye) and she's six months pregnant. She immediately gave use her name, number and the name of her father who owns the dog. She was even yelling at him a bit, telling him that something has to be done with this dog. Methinks we have her sympathies.

The dog owner, on the other hand, I am not sure. he did agree in front of the two cops that he would pay the vet bills, but he made some comments to Jerry about his dog following ours back under the fence and into the yard. If push comes to shove, we have the vet's report and tons of pictures if he decides to be a *ahem excuse me* world class chopf**k about it.

the only way you can have them do something about a dog that as you say has attacked before is to press charges so that animal control gets involved.....

A friend of mines 8 year old son was attacked by a pit bull about 2 years ago. He was sitting in his own yard playing and this dog came running across the street and attacked him for no reason. When my friend finally got to her son and many of the other neighbors neighbors got the dog off, her son was face down with his hands behind his head. The dog was trying to get to his neck! Poor child was a mess. The dog actually ripped his testicles almost off.....HUGE bite marks, puncture wounds, etc. and on his stomach th edog and bit him and ripped the tissue. over 300 stitches total. Authorities took the dog, she took the owners to court and the owners could not understand WHY they wanted the dog to be put down! I know people say it's how you raise the dog, but these dogs have this in their blood. Scary.

Casey has a pit bull. When I first heard that I was scared, media created hysteria.

His pit bull is the sweetest dog I have ever met. She is well behaved and very loving.

I am not a dog lover so it takes a lot for me to like a dog.

It is totally in how the dog is trained and treated.
