I took 4 years of Spanish in Jr/Sr H.S. (it was only 3 levels though because Level I in Jr. HS was split over 2 years) but that was over 25 years ago. Other than hearing some friends and neighbors speak it (I live in FL so I do hear it often), I never paid it much attention again until I met my fiancée and since she doesn't speak much English other than a few words or basic phases, everything between us has generally been 99% in Spanish.

I wouldn't call myself fluent in Spanish by any means, but now I can survive fairly well when I am out and about on my own in Colombia while I'm visiting her, although I'm sure there are times that I simply speak English using Spanish words and people must think "What?" (or "¿Qué?) :D

the language? or the yelling?

usually yelling isnt done in nice language and it reminbds me of when friends from another country were visiting. one of them asked me what a certain term meant and i told him it wasnt even a word/phrase... he seemed surprised becasue he had bene told by his non-english speaking friends that it meant a certain very nasty phrase, something that would instantly cause a fight within their circle if a man says it to another man. he had been working wiht this one particularly abrasive guy (to put it mildly) and was fed up with him so he yells this at the guy and put his fists up ready to fight and the guy just walked away  thats when he knew the term must be wrong. one of his non-english speaking friends had heard this but obviously not clearly, then repeated it to the rest of the group. cursing seems to be the easiest thing to learn in another language :P

 to my horror my friend went to all his friends immediately to correct them and so there they all stood, all of them repeating this nasty phrase, and NOT quietly i might add  eeek! learned my lesson not to correct foul language from now on
