I took 2 years of French in HS and know a little Spanish. Jinky's native tongue is Bisaya (Cebuano), but she can also Tagalog, the official language of the Philippines.

I'm the USC and I speak Portuguese and Spanish.

I studied Latin for a year in HS, French for a semester in college, and many years of Spanish in HS, college, and abroad.

I began to study Portuguese in college but learned almost nothing until I moved to Brazil.

My husband's native tongue is Portuguese - which we mostly speak together - though we're practicing more and more English. He is still quite basic. And although he does not want to learn Spanish - he is - by living in FL. He understands a great deal but can't speak it.

i took German all 4 yrs of high school & thru 210 in college...i know bits of Spanish also... but i am certainly not fluent in either...

my hubby speaks 4 languages: Dutch, German, French, & English

Jinky's cousin from the Netherlands visited us last weekend along with her boyfriend. Even though the cousin is half Filipina, her parents chose to speak Dutch and English at home and not her mother's native tongue. She and her boyfriend both speak several languages as well - they said it's taught in school. That's awesome. :star:

Sometimes I wish languages were taught in the lower grades. Little kids learn languages much quicker than older ones do. We are going to teach our daughter the French dialect my husband speaks, French Acadian and most likely she'll be taking Spanish in HS when the time comes so she'll hopefully be multilingual. We both speak a small amount of Spanish and he can understand some Russian and German. He's working on teaching me to speak French as well. I love languages and wish I had the time to devote to learning as many as possible. :)

My native language is Swedish. My second language is Finnish. I'm fluent in English. I have pretty good skills in German, which I've studied for eight years. I also read fluently Norwegian and Danish, the later I studied for one year. Furthermore I've studied Russian for two years and Italian, Spannish and Latin one year each. I'm currently thinking about learning French but I haven't yet had the chance to study it.

My wife (the USC) is of course a native English speaker but she's fluent in German and Spanish. She also speaks a little bit of Finnish.

i agree... my daughter has been taking french since 1st grade... and thats in a public school! she will have it each year thru 5th grade... then when she goes to the middle school, i think she gets to have a choice whether to continue it or start another language...

i had some spanish when i was in preschool and kindergarten... that was a montessori school tho... but some of it certainly stuck...

I took french in HS for 4 years, I can undertand it very well but I can't speak it since I never used it after HS. That was about 10 years ago. Still I know enough to get by.

I do speak Spanish as it is my first languange and I picked up Italian in my college years. Currently working on getting the basics for Hindi/Urdu down.

He speaks some German and French, he studied both at the same time in school so sometimes he starts in one language and ends in the other

I speak a little Spanish (I can understand it more than I can speak it) and I know some Romanian. Last time I spoke Romanian though, I was cursing up a storm  My ex husband used to get cursed out in three languages :D

I'd love to learn German and finish learning Romanian.

I speak English and Spanish. I am NOT fluent in Spanish, because I still panic when I am spoken to by a native speaker :) but I did teach it for 7 years. I haven't taught it in 2 years, and I realized that when I don't use it everyday, it just sort of goes away. I lived in Spain from ages 9 months to 5 years, and spoke Spanish fluently until I was about 7, then didn't take it again until college. I was two classes and an oral exam short of a Spanish degree, but I panicked and opted for English and History degrees instead :)

I took 4 years of high school French and can say "Will you sleep with me tonight?" and "Broken! Oh my God! Don't stay in the snow!" Useful. I'm learning German, very slowly.

My fiance speaks German as his native language, English with near native fluency, and is conversational in French. He understands a bit of Dutch as well, but never studied it. I think that's just because some of the words are similar to German.

My daughter takes Spanish and my son is fluent in German, has already taken 3 years of French and is about to start his first year of Spanish. He's 16!!!!! (I'm jealous)
