I was just looking at the requirements to get a drivers license and it seems odd to me for Massachusetts.

If you are 18 years of age or older:

You must present the following:

  • SSN Card or valid, current U.S. or non-U.S. Passport
  • Document proving date of birth
  • Document proving signature
  • Document proving Massachusetts residency

Note: One of the documents, other than a SSN card or passport, must be a Primary document.

  • A valid Social Security Number that verifies with the Social Security Administration or an acceptable written denial notice from the Social Security Administration.

Note: The Social Security Administration does not include any Visa information on written denial notices, therefore, if you do not have a valid Social Security Number, you will have to provide evidence of an acceptable Visa code in addition to the written denial notice from the Social Security Administration.

All documents must be originals. Photocopies will not be accepted. You must also clear a check through the National Driver Register and pay the required fees.

So basically what I think this is saying is that when my husband gets here, he can immediately apply for a SS number and get denied and then he's got the green light to get a license? :help: That makes no sense.

I dunno. The only thing I can think of is if you don't have the EAD already then they cannot issue the social security number so you'd get a denial. That's what I'm hoping since that would mean he could work on the driver's license while waiting for EAD.

I tried to get a denial for my SSN so I could do exactly what you are suggesting.... did not work... yes you can get a SSN denial letter from the SSA but a K3 visa code is not one of the acceptable codes. I had to wait until I had my EAD to get my MA drivers License....

I'm moving to Massachusetts when I get my K1 so this makes interesting reading. Were you able to drive on your UK licence until you got your EAD and your MA licence?

Thanks,

Gillian

Yes your UK license is good for 1 year or until you become a resident.... I asked what made you a resident and was told once I had an EAD or Greencard....

So I drove on my UK License until I took my road test and got my MA license...

Oh meant to say a K1 holder can get a MA License but it will only be valid until the expiry of the I-94, so not worth it.... better to wait for the EAD

Thanks very much for that - I was having a bit of a nightmare trying to get this info from the DMV and RMV websites. You've saved me a lot of research.
