whoo hoo, everything's reserved. moving Oct. 11. I've found us a really nice house close to my uni. I'm moving my little bit of stuff out of my studio that I've kind of lived in for the past 1.5 years into our new house this weekend. yippie.

We'll be driving the long way from Calgary to Abq-via BC. My dear mum-in-law is not happy that her son is moving to the states rather than me move back to Calgary. Hopefully a quick stop over will convince her that I'm not making him move just so I can dump him in the next year or so (her prediction). Usually she and I get on very well, but she was as rude and mean as an 80-something-year-old English/Canadian woman can be when the hubby told her that he'd finally gotten his visa. My plan is to emphasize the fact that grandkids are more likely if we are living in the same country, we'll see how well that logic does in getting me back in her good graces.

Do you have to have your visa granted before you can ship your stuff via Upack? We were planning to ship my stuff down on Nov 1st, a full month at least before my visa interview, because I'll be boarding with a friend (rent-free!) from Nov 1st-May 1st and won't have room for my stuff.

However, it occurred to me that maybe Upack needs info from your visa to cross the border with your junk, is this true? This could put a kink in our plans, and not the good kind!

I'm guessing from what you just said that your U.S. Citizen is in - the U.S., therefore yes, unfortunately they need documentation that you are allowed to be there, as in your visa - sorry about that!

Yup, you need to supply the moving company with specific photocopies (the visa being one). You also have to fax them a copy of your I-94 after you cross so that the driver can present all that stuff at the border.

you might want to look into upack storing your stuff for a month or 2. If all of your stuff can fit into one cube it'll cost $125 a month to store. if your sig. other has status in Canada, I've heard that the shipment can go under her/his name. I'm not sure if there is any duty implications in sending the stuff under the USC's name rather than the new immigrant. My hubby got his visa last month, and even with our side trip to BC we should be across the border before the stuff gets there. We have to fax something, I can't remember what form, back to UPack to show that he's immigrated.

I guess since you're CR-1 you'd fax them a copy of the I-551 stamp and the entry stamp?

sure, I'll take your word for it-you're usually right.

now I'm wondering if the hubby should activate his visa at the border crossing that's just south of the mum-in-law's. then turn right back around and spend the night in Canada with the mum? This is to make sure that they have all the right papers before the cube gets to the border. Of course several of the recent reviews have said that they didn't fax a copy of the stamp and had no problem. what to do?

:D I've been known to be wrong though. ;)

I guess the best course of action would be for him to get his I-551 stamp and whatever else he gets (I'm assuming a standard entry stamp in addition to the I-551?) and then fax it asap to Upack. I'm one of the people where UPack forgot to ask me to fax over the I-94 and entry stamp and I still got my stuff okay. I guess it depends on the particular officer the driver gets at the border and whether they bother to inspect the paperwork carefully enough (or at all).

Len, you guys are sending your stuff in Bren's name right? do you know if there is any sort of duty issues if the stuff is sent in the USC's name? Or since I've officially lived in Canada for the past 3 years, I can import used household goods duty free? I had a lovely chat this morning with my financial aid officer which has exaggerated my normal feeling of poverty, so if we don't have to pay duty on our stuff that'd be great.

You betcha, things are being shipped under Dr. B's name (I'm the mystery lover he he he). Don't think there's duty to pay... all things he already owned (furniture) and they are already reflected in the inventory he brought over when he first crossed (with United Van Lines).

So what you are saying is that I could store my stuff for 2 months until my visa is approved, but my stuff can go ahead of me even though I don't activate my visa until May 1st?

no I think that you'd need to have your cube stored in Canada until you move. you have to show evidence of right to live in the US before your stuff can cross the border.
