Pre-exisiting Social Security Number

Good Evening! I am brand new to this site and have been greatly enjoying the information available here. I have just about everything in order to send in our petition and am only waiting until I move in two weeks to send it (long story short, I am moving from Japan back to America on the 25th and figured I would not complicate the process with an overseas address change).

My one concern is that my fiancee already has a social security number/card due to her having attended college in the US and having various student jobs. I am wondering if I should put that on the petition form, perhaps including a photo copy of her card, or if that will needless complicate things, etc? Will she keep this number after she arrives in the US or is a brand new one going to be assigned?

I apologize in advance if this is covered elsewhere, a search of a few minutes did not seem to indicate this topic being addressed.

Thank you for any advice!

composerwise,

Put the SS# on any form that asks for it - no, a new one will not be assigned, Social Security numbers are assigned for life. Your fiancé will also have an Alien Registration number ("A" number) which can be listed on some forms (if you/he/she doesn't know it, thats OK, just leave it blank, 'they' will find it). Hope this helps..

Well, let's see.

They ask for it on the I 129f for both the USC and non USC, so list it there. They don't ask you to document it beyond that - they'll be able to verify it anyway.

And yes, generally, you keep the same number forever. Given the grief most K1ers go through to get one, she's fortunate to already have one!

Correct, except don't leave the A number blank. Don't leave anything blank. If you don't know it, write unknown. They'll know she has one, based on the other information submitted.

I think this is a great time saver for you guys. I wish my fiancee already had a SSN. Make sure you report it - if they issue you a new SSN, it will cause issues down the line. I don't see how it would hurt to include a photocopy of the card, although it is not required.

I have my SSN and put it on all forms that asked for it. As for the A number, i put "unknown." i think the A number might be on the I-94. but you really don't need to find it to put it in the forms.

Good luck. (F)

No, the A number is assigned at approval of the petition (NOA2), and will also be on the K1 visa when you eventually receive it.

But in the case of the OP, his fiance should already have a previous A# due to being in the US on previous visa (student?). I agree that the space should not be blank. Unknown would be the answer. If she could find her previous A#, it might speed your process up a bit by them not having to search it out and verify current status of it.

That is true - she likely has an A # (was so focused on the SSN that I blanked that part!).

But if she can't remember it, no panic, as I'm sure 'unknown' would indeed be the acceptable answer.

Thanks everyone for the replies and advice. We will put the social on the form, and include a photocopy of her card for additional clarification. She is checking her records for her old A# but if not we will put 'unknown' as suggested.

Mailing the package next week, feeling a little nervous, as I always do when something important leaves my hands and goes into the unknown. I like to think we have it all covered: I have included my orders stationing me in Japan, a signed statement from my commander verifying I am/was stationed in Tokyo (back to the US next week), both our apartment leases placing us in Tokyo, translated utilities bills, copies of passes of her visiting the air base with me listed as the sponser, and a dozen or so labeled photos. To make double sure we are going to the base legal office on Thursday to both sign and have notarized our statement about 'how we met' and 'having met in person.' <crosses fingers for everything to go smoothly>

Again, Yoko and I thank you for the advice!
