I've seen everywhere that I485 is just terrible to do. My local office (Hartford, CT) has almost no backlog for this form, so I'm wondering... is it just not worth it to play with the form? Or does the brutality of this route vary from local office * to * local office?

From what I see, the K3 takes about 6 months total to finish up (from Jordan, at least. Appointments are about 1 month away from receipt of the form, Amman's a quick embassy without real massive traffic.)

CR1 takes about 1 year (6mos for I130, 6mos for visa!). And, that's just a horrible wait. To get rid of 6 months of wait, hey - I can deal with extra time with her here in the USA. :)

SSN, not a big problem for her. She doesn't need it at this point.

So, what's the deal with AOS/i485? Just how long does this process take start-to-finish?

[so sorry for my vagueness :) It's late here, and I've had a busy day. Thanks for your pointers, contributors! ]

The moral of my story: Stick with someone who matches your own culture.

( This coming from an Arab who married an Arab from overseas... go figure. )

Well, if she's here with you and doesn't need to work right away, it doesn't matter a lot how long it takes. I would say generally 3 to 6 months from filing to Green Card as long as there are no ommissions or complications. EAD for work authorization takes three or four months. This is highly dependant on the local service center's workload though.

My own circumstances motivated us to delay filing AOS with the intention of completing it after our two-year wedding anniversary. The increase in fees changed the strategy and we filed two months earlier than we wanted to for both wife and daughter. We filed earlier for wife's EAD and expect the daughter's EAD any day. It's been four months. Wife's took only three months.

Good luck whatever you decide.
