Finally heard from Montreal....interview Sep 19th! It's almost hard to believe! I know you lucky VJ'ers have Uhauls packed and ready to go when that K3 arrives ...but sadly I have to wait for that work auth. to transfer with my job. I want to cross with my new K3 ASAP and start the ball rolling on the AOS/EAD but don't want to make the big move right away... I have to come back to Canada for work. Does anyone know if crossing and activating your K3 is your one-shot chance to enter with all your worldly possessions or can I drive across with all that stuff later on down the road?

Mon Montreal bound

K3 is a multiple entry visa, so come and go as one wishes!! With regards to possessions, I believe (could be wrong) 1 has up to 10 yrs to bring stuff across.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I was also told by my US customs counterparts that that there is no hurry as I have 10 years.

We are hoping to close on a house Oct. 1 so I'll have somewhere to actually bring all my stuff!! So many big things happening all at once. I'm sure my parents will celebrate the day I finally get the last of my junk from their "complimentary basement storage".

Now if only I can stop playing phone tag with Dr. Seiden's answering machine and get that physical.....

Did you leave Dr. Seiden's a message? I noticed they rarely actually answer the phone...

It is 10 years:

To be eligible for duty-free exemption, the articles must have either been available for your use or used in a household where you were a resident for one year. The year of use does not need to be continuous, nor does it need to be the year immediately before the date of importation

Household effects from the country where these effects were used, and meeting the above criteria, may be entered into the United States duty-free within 10 years after your initial arrival in the United States as a legal resident.

The source document is here - it's amazingly boring:
