Hi! I am still so away from my EAD and hence my California drivers license as i dont have proof of legal presence :( My home country drivers license is valid here in CA but how does one work the car insurance? I want to buy a car too..can I do that? Your inputs will be of greta help.

I live in California too and are only able to drive a car if it's rental.

My husbands insurance company don't want me added until I have a California ID.

We found too that my husband's insurance company would not put me on until I had a CA DL.

K1 VISA & MARRIAGE - 8 MONTHS

17 February 2004 Sent I-129F petition CSC - It was APPROVED in 147 days

3 September 2004 INTERVIEW IN LONDON SUCCESSFUL VISA APPROVED! MARRIED OCTOBER 16, 2004

ADJUSTMENT OF STATUS - 5 MONTHS

4 January 2005 - Submitted applications for AOS and EAD - 12 May 2005 Conditional Permanent Residency Approved - interview in Santa Ana

4 June 2005 CPR 2-year Green Card arrives in mail

REMOVAL OF CONDITIONS - 3½ MONTHS

8 May 2007 - I-751 sent to CSC - 23 August 2007 - Approved - Card production ordered

30 August 2007 - 10 year Green Card received

K2 TIMELINE (Stayed behind in UK to finish school)

Go to a Farmers agent and ask them, Farmers accepted my UK driving licence and insured me no problems in Oregon some months before I got an Oregon licence, So unless there is a different requirement in California they have to be worth asking.

Unfortunalety CA has some strict laws. We were unable to get a CA ID or learns permit let alone insurance :whistle: I sure hope for a speedy EAD.

Lansbury is correct - "Farmers" recognize foreign DL's, and may not even charge you an arm and a leg for insurance, but that I don't know for sure.

You can buy a car without a CA driver's license.

You can buy a car without a CA driver's license.

Farmers were pretty reasonable rates and even accepted our UK insurance certificates as proof of previous insurance. The rate must have been based on our driving history as when I did get my Oregon licence the rate didn't go down, so they hadn't loaded the rate for a non US licence.

When I looked at Progressive after I got an Oregon licence they would have been 38% more expensive than Farmers.

Farmers generally load 10% for non US DL.
