I've never been touched by overseas service before. My family has never served in the military, but I find myself touched these days as my BIL is currently in Iraq. I just wanted to start a wee thread for those of us who have loved ones who are in harms way all over the globe. Regardless of where my thoughts lie politically my heart surges with pride for this man who has done all that he could to help a cause he believes fully in, and to serve his country in this way. He has heard the call and has risen to the occasion and I have nothing but respect for a man who stands for something larger than himself. I see the same pride in country in my husband and I know that he has some idea of what his brother is facing as he served his country for 7 years overseas as well.

Every report out of Iraq hits me differently now, and we pray all the time for his wife and two beautiful daughters who wait back home.

Anyone else watching and waiting?

I watched and waited for 6 months - man those were a looonnnnggggg 6 months.

The soldiers and the civilians who serve out there (remember, there are a lot of civilians that are deployed also) deserve better than the treatment that they are getting at the hands of our leaders. I'm really proud of my husband for going. He's still recovering from it, and the experience changed him.

Keep sending those care packages to him - the flat rate free boxes you can get from the USPS are great, they'll even send you a big box full of 'em and packing tape if you give them a call and request one (at least I hope that's still the case).

Watching and waiting for my brother to get back! He has been there since October, saw him on his leave in January, and hopefully he will get back next month - I can't wait! :)

Hee, my buddy was forced to be a SGT too - they call him WarmFuzzy because he's a democrat and a hippy tree hugger (as they like to call him) and none of his battle buddies are.

Man, it's tough to watch them come back and be messed up though...one friend got the jitters every time he was driving and saw trash by the side of the road (still does, it's the classic IED cover over there), another has pretty bad PTSD and nearly lost all his friends when he came home because he behaved like a complete tool. My husband got really horrible staph infections in his face. They tested the water at the camp he was at and using for stuff like a shower here and there, and found the bacteria levels were off the charts. Oh, and by the way, none of them got any form of treatment from the military until they annoyed enough people and threatened lawsuits.

I cant even begin to imagine what that must be like. To all of you I say, Thank you.

a big  to you all!!

My BIL is actually a civilian but was sent as a Gov worker. It has been his life's dream to serve his country.. THAT is something that I admire so much. He was unable to get into the service when he was younger, and now this is his opportunity to serve. I am blown away by that!!

These are exceptional men & women for sure!
