We stayed at the Rayon-Verte B&B just off of Mont-Royal on the Plateau. if you're interested in making the trip to Montreal a little vacation too I highly recommend the place. our room was $90 a night but I think that there are some for 70 or 80 we just booked 2 weeks before we went so the smaller/cheaper rooms were taken. There is a metro stop a block away on one of the lines that goes through downtown. It's a 3ish block walk from the Victoria Square stop to the US Consulate.

so got to the consulate at 7:40ish. it looked like we were 3rd in line but one guy wanted to finish his smoke and the other couple had brought their suitcases so had to go back to their hotel. We gulped down our coffee and went through security. we were handed a little cardboard note with the letter "E" on it and instructions to go to window 9. went downstairs to wait for the elevator. went to the back and were first off but then couldn't see window 9 (it's down the hall towards the bathrooms but you can't see the sign from the elevator). The guard pointed us in the right direction after she saw our little card. I was surprised to see 4 other couples already in the waiting room-I thought the first elevator was at 8? Around 8:15 we were called to a window to go over our paperwork-it was obviously the first time anyone in Montreal had opened our folder because she was going through form by form and checking off a list. She gave back his birth cert and our marriage cert. went back and sat down till 8:45ish. then were called back to the same window and the woman took his fingerprints. At about 9:20 we were called to the interview room

The interview itself. asked how we met (met in Yellowstone) asked why we were in Yellowstone in a tone that implied that there was no reason the Park Service would have a microbiologist or an archaeologist working for it. Asked a few occupation specific questions-cause if we were lying about our jobs we wouldn't have picked something more common. I'm still not sure if those questions were to reassure him that we actually did what we say we do or if he was just killing time to meet some minimum length of the interview. Asked the hubby if he would have to give up his Canadian job (yes). Then asked why anyone in the US would want to hire an archaeologist-hubby told him. He asked if we would live at my current address in the US or would have to find a new place. That was it, the whole interview took less than 3 minutes.

Contrads!!!

he's been asked that enough to have an answer ready. I on the other hand was not ready for a question about how bacteria eat sulfur. immigration and microbial metabolism live in very different parts of my brain. I said something that was partly wrong but sounded good. let that be a warning-they may ask a follow up question about ANY thing you say.

Congrats!!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
