Let's say you rob a bank and get away with it and use the money to start a successful business.

10 years later new evidence comes to light which proves that you're guilty. Should the cops

just say, "Hey, you've been an upstanding, law-abiding citizen for the past 10 years, let's forget

about that $4 million you stole, ok?"

What if the statute of limitations was exceeded in regards to commencing prosecution within the appropriate time period after the offence was commited?

Then I guess the cops would be able to say "let's forget about it because we can't prosecute it."

What if there was no statute of limitations for the crime? What if, what if.

You think a bank robbery is more damaging than a single act of crossing the border?

Let's play the what-if game.

What if you rob your local Citibank branch? Are they really going to miss a couple of million

dollars? They've got billions, and they're going to write off the losses anyway. More losses,

less tax for them, less money for Bush and his wars - a good thing, right? You, on the other

hand, will become a millionaire overnight, invest the money in American businesses, maybe

even start your own business, hire new employees, create new jobs. So what's the problem?

Let's just forgive and forget, right?

if this woman flat out said to you, "i had my son here on american soil just so that the govt wouldnt deport me, even tho i am here illegally" would you still feel the same?

i find it distasteful and frankly unethical for her to be using her son as a pawn

I don't know this woman's intentions but I'll never feel threatened by a foreigner who wants to come here and work in childcare or clean planes.

You feel comfortable enough to leave your children in daycare with people that are here under an assumed identity? It must be nice knowing that you can entrust illegal aliens with the care of our children. Which they have no background checks, etc. Next thing you know, we'll have children dying at the hands of people that were breaking US laws in the first place.

Assumed identity? Did she change her name?

Well, as I mentioned before, Abolitionists
Fruity. Apples and Oranges anyone?
The mindset is the same, whether you agree with her views or not. Activists throughout history have often defied the very rulers and rules when they felt they were unjust.
The underlying cause is vastly different making the comparison useless.
History will be the judge of that, brother. I can't imagine you or I having the same perspective we have about slavery that we do now if we were living in that time period. ;) Perspective is a beautiful thing.
To compare illegals with slaves does not do justice to what slaves endured. Seesm to me that you're losing something beautiful here.
I wasn't make a direct comparison and you know it. I was trying to demonstrate that what was once accepted by many and fully legal 150 years ago no longer holds true, and there were people at the time who dared to defy society's rules because they followed their conscience rather than law.

Find something comparable and we'll talk.

Hopefully both of us can look at issues more abstractly than simple one on one comparisons. My point (red text) still stands. ;)

You cannot liken the plight of ILLEGAL ALIENS WHO WILLFULLY, KNOWINGLY break United States Law for their own selfish gain by a. unlawfully entering the country, b. committing fraud, c. having a child in the states in an effort to remain in the usa to that of African slaves over 150 years ago. Not only does it cheapen the horror of slavery, it attempts to endear the plight of ILLEGALS to mainstream America, and that is just despicable. They deserve no sympathy, they deserve no understanding. They are criminals. Do you feel sorry for the 34 year old man who was abused by a priest as a 5 year old child, who then goes on to sexually molest hundreds of children? You can't differentiate criminals based on crimes. Wrong is wrong, and wrong should be punished accordingly by due process.

THERE IS NO EXCUSE TO NOT ENTER THIS COUNTRY LEGALLY, TO IMMIGRATE LEGALLY. I have saved, struggled, and worked 2 jobs to be able to afford immigration for my hubby and son. I am sick to death of hearing people make excuses for illegals, I'm sick of hearing sob stories for illegals. Legal immigration is much more heartbreaking than someone entering illegally. I cannot fathom anyone who has gone through this process legally having any sort of understanding for people who do not, considering the amount of bullcrap we have had to endure for real, true love and family.

I read it and understood it andddd comprehended it. You have a point (but possibly - as mentioned - maybe not a great analogy in this particular situation) :)

Here's what was posted before me...

um, other criminal activity would included crossing the border a second time after being deported and evading a second deportation

how many laws does someone need to break before its ok to actually enforce the penalty(ies) for breaking said laws?

and my reply...

Well, as I mentioned before, Abolitionists willingly participated in slaves leaving their masters, which at the time was breaking the law. Whether you agree with her justifications, the fact is that people have in the past broken laws that they felt were unjust. With the Abolitionists, we now consider their acts heroic.

If the argument against illegal immigrants is simply because their presence here is outside of law, that our laws, particularly our immigration laws are not a necessary indication of what is just. (see the red tex) That's the meat of my argument. I compared the actions of Abolitionists as activists who acted OUTSIDE the law. That's the only necessary comparison you need to follow (activists acting outside of the law). It was in response to Kez who questioned how someone could be breaking the law and still consider themselves an activist. Hopefully most can extract that without simplifying into a one on one comparison. ...sigh.
