I had my medical yesterday. The total time from entering to leaving was 50 minutes and the whole process was very straightforward.

The medical was at Bentinck Mansions which I found easy to find from Bond Street tube station.

At the reception they took my passport to photocopy, the medical questionnaire, photo and vaccination certificate. Overall I would say the reception staff are efficient but not overly welcoming. I was then shown to the waiting room and after a few minutes given the second questionnaire to complete and the aids test authority to sign. The questionnaire is broadly similar to the NVC one. It was useful to read the bottom half of page one which the doctor completes to get a feeling for what they are looking for, i.e. assessing general demeanour, giving honest answers etc. Once I handed back the questionnaire it was about a five minute wait for the radiologist to call me through for the x-ray. She sounded South African and was quite friendly. The x-ray was very quick, just take of my shirt, stand in front of the developing plate, hold in a deep breath and that was it. Back on with the shirt and then off to the second waiting room.

The wait here was about 15 minutes and then the doctor called me through. I had the Irish doctor. He is very easy going and we had a chat about the 3 month delay to the visa process last autumn due to the back log and how I lost the coin toss and am ending up in the US. :)

The examination itself was very basic and apart from shoes didn't involve taking any clothes off. I was weighed, height measured and eyes tested. Then a quick look in my ears and mouth. He lifted up my shirt to check my chest with the stethoscope and did a quick feel of glands etc. With trouser belt undone it was a quick look down to make sure I am what I say I am and then on to drawing some blood.

With that it was all done and time to pay the £180 fee.

They gave me a copy of the vaccination documentation worksheet which shows the waiver claimed for all the vaccines not appropriate for my age group. They were happy with the Td vaccination I had and didn't require me to have the Tdap one.

So overall very straightforward and now hopefully one more step to go with the embassy interview on 27th October and I will finally get the visa after 14 months.

Fantastic thread with loads of helpful and reassuring info - especially the bits about having medical & interview on the same day if you have a long & expensive journey.

What I AM concerned about is the history of depression. I've had several bouts (always reactive to some major negative life events) but therefore am more prone to it happening again. Some people have said they were told it may delay the visa so I'm wondering how long this delay might be? Also, my GP is a bit of a numptie and doesn't really word things too well in letters/reports so is it something I should be worried about?

I also spotted people mentioning UK & US size passport photos and thought - OMG I sent my faince UK size passport photos to send with the I-129F/G-325A, will this get an RFE??? He'll be ready to send off our petition in the next couple of days so do I need to tell him to wait for another photo from me?

I'm not sure about your question regarding Depression, but I am sure it will come up is there anyone else at your local GP office that could write the letter for you? .

Dont worry about the Petition Photographs, I have heard people send off the wrong size before and it has been fine I believe US size is just Preferred however at the Embassy they will only accept the US Size but in the worse case scenario an RFE would set you back a week or two, I doubt that will happen.

for the ladies out there who have been through their medical, how intrusive or efficient is the genital part of the exam. do they look properly for probems you might have or just take a peek to check you are a girl. just need some confirmation cos, i thought it was just a peek but someone else is expecting a proper look. so which is it? also is it done by a female employee if you are a girl and vice versa?

It is just a peek , not intrusive at all! :)

Yes it is done with a female, just be aware that after you strip and are given a rather thin gown the waiting room you sit in is for both males and females.

I had my medical today, total time was around 25 minutes. Very quick and efficient, and no problems at all. I'll write a more detailed account soon. Also I didn't need to have the Tdap vaccine, the normal Td vaccine was enough.

i was reading jerally posted account of her medical and she said a letter from your doc is needed. is this true did anyone find out about this for sure?

an offhanded comment from the receptionist sounded like it is, but i'm worried about being able to get a letter from my doctor in time. and its really worrying me  my medical is on the 6th but, i went in last monday with a letter requesting vaccinations and a letter from my gp and have not heard anything bk at all and i cant get appointments with them its stupid but i can't get p[ast the receptionists.

what happens if i cant bring in a letter?

I just arranged my medical today.

Hannah+Vito, the Knightsbridge doctors told me to bring along vaccinations records so I think you'll need something. If not I think they may decide to give you vaccines there an charge you for them.

Id reccommend finding out the name of your GP practice manager and write to them directly. I didnt get anywhere with the doctors, nurses or receptionists themselves but the practice manager wrote back with 2 days. I believe it's part of their duty to respond to patient requests regarding copies of their medical records.

I also offered to pay money if required (they can charge for this if they want to), I didnt get asked for money but the fact that you show willingness may help. Good luck

hi i finally got to speak with the doctor, its difficult to do that which our receptionists i dont knpw why, i'm not the only one who has problems with them, but after speaking with the doctor everything got done.

i gave them my child health records, and a letter regarding past treament for depression and all was fine, i opted not to have the vaccines with them as i am on k1, i'm gunna try and get them for free or cheaper on nhs. i wasnt in need of half yet anyhow but will need them in dec, so might as well get them that way. the whole thing was reallly quick

Hi Everyone! I went for my medical yesterday and tought id share my account with you. ill apologise in advance tho, for my dyslexic spelling! hehe.

So Tuesday the 12th i traveled from Edinburgh to london with easy jet. which took all of 30 mins! we took the bus from luton to victoria and stayed in the grapevine hotel there. PLEASE dont ever stay there! i couldnt go in the bathroom without my throat burning from breatheing in the mould. yuck!

Anyways. the morning of the 13th we got the tube to bond street, got some starbucks then walked to find the medical place (Bendnick mansions). my appointment was at 1.10pm and i got there at 12.50pm. i buzzed to get in and they told me to go away, there were closed for lunch! hehe. so i went back for 1pm and they let me in.

I got to reception and a blonde receptionist, who clearly hates her job, clarcked me in. i then waited in the posh waiting room. While there i filled out another form, basically the same but more detailed form thats in packet3. I handed it in just as the nurse called for me. she offered me the vaccinations i needed and told me it cost £340 all together!! I couldnt belive it! but i decided to take it because she documented it all together more professionally than my doc would. so i got three shots: tetnus, mmr (even though i was already immune to rubella) and the HPV (which hurt like a ######!). After that i went straight for my xray. The dude doing it was hilarious. Really nice and made you feel at ease. the first xray wasnt clear enough so i got it redone. meanwhile the old xray was on the light box and i saw it was totally clear (i used to work in a chest ward, so i saw those xrays everday!). After that, because i had robe on covering my top half, i was sent to a seperate waiting room.

From there the doctor called me in. I cant tell you enough of how nice and chilled this doctor was. She was so down to earth! The first thing she addressed was my history of depression. I had a letter from my doc saying it was in the past, reated succesfully and i wasnt any risk to myself or anyone else. she asked me a few questions about it. she was reallu understanding about it. I then had to do the eye test, which was easy peasy. Then came the 'are you really a girl' part of it all. i was asked to de robe. All i heard was 'who the hell did your shots?!'. i explained who it was. i looked at my arm and there was blood everywhere! All down my arm. So she applied pressure and put a new dressing on. and went on with the exam and asked me to drop my trousers! As soon as i got then down, she asked for them to be put back up again. So its not intrusive at all. she then went on to cheack my tummy, throat, eyes, skin, glands, Blood pressure and finally took blood for the AIDS test. The doc wrote up my notes and it was time to leave! ....After paying the £340 pound!

overall it was a good expreiance. no complaints.

I then went and discovered the amazingness of camden town!! I didnt want to leave! Any ways, i hope that report was helpful!

Fee, why in God's name did you agree to pay that!!???? Obviously I didn't need the HPV, but they did try to flog me the MMR and the Tdap for an exorbitant sum. Last week, I walked into my local surgery and go them done for diddly squat - and I'd implore everyone else to do the same!!
