Overall, I thought they were very helpful (though the lady sounded a little bored during the conversation at first.)

When I was in the waiting room I heard the receptionist answer the phone a lot and give the same information over and over again. She must do this 20 times a day every day of her life so I guess she would be a bit bored.

I'm a bit frustrated over my medical situation.

I admitted that I self harmed in 2004 on my questionnaire, and have a letter that my doctor has to sign, or, one of the doctors at the practice I go to. I went to see one of them today and he said that he felt he wasn't qualified to sign the letter the Knightsbridge doctor has given me. By the time I had my appointment Knightsbridge was already closed for the day, so now I'll have to call back from work in the morning to make sure I understood exactly what I have to do.

If I can't get my doctor to sign about the two underlined sentences that basically say that chances are I won't self-harm again or that I likely won't need psychiatric help later on in life... I'll have to have a complete assessment, and I have no idea how / where I'd get one done.

It's turning into a bit of a nightmare.

All of this so that Knightsbridge can send my completed medical info to the Embassy.

Sometimes it doesn't pay to be too honest. They go by the information you give them and the test results that they take. They don't check anything. They don't ask your doctor's name. If you don't tell them they won't know.

Well I just thought if I didn't tell them and they noticed, it would be worse for me, so I told them. Well I'm trying to get a signature but I'm going to try one of the other doctors and see what happens. I just don't want this to get in the way of everything after getting over it in the first place and then having a chance to be happy, only to let it get in my way.

hello

I had my medical yesturday and thought i let everyone know what happened :).

Woke up at 3.30am to get ready i didnt really feel nervous jus scared i might have left something, but lucky i didnt :). My dad was driving me down to london so the hole family came too lol. We set off at 6am we got half way down an stopped at a cafe for some breakfast. We arrrived at the underground at 11 am which was in woodside park london, we left the car there and got the underground to Bond street. I had a hour and a half before my appointment so me and my family did some site seeing of london, I hadnt been to london since i was a little girl so it was great, we took the underground to oxford circus, had a quick look round there , then we got the underground back to bond street, from there we went to marylebone lane which took us up to bentinken street, at first we walk straight past the knightsbridge doctors, they is no sign out side so nothing stands out, anyways i got there at 1pm, i was buzzed in and it was the door on the right ( flat 4 ). I went to the reception, i told then who i was , the lady asked me for my passport, questionnaire, vaccination records and photos, i then was asked to wait in the waiting room, about 5 mins i was asked to fill out this questionnaire which was the same as the one i brought with me just set out a little different and i had to sign also to say i agreed on having the blood tests done. I was called at 1.30pm and taken to discuss what vaccination i needed, which was the MMR and and HPV, the lady asked me if i wanted to have them done there or wait, i said i was going to wait,( as the MMR i can get for free on the NHS), so she jus said she sign me off, she then took me to another waiting room which i was in there for about 10 mins then i was called and taken for my chest x rays, i was asked to take off my top and put this gown on, then i was told to stand agaist this metal plate , had my elbow stuck out and and my hands pushing in to my waist ( abit like a chicken lol) then i had to hold this thing in my hands, then he asked me to take in a deep breath and hold, after that i was told to keep the gown on and go back to the waiting room, i was waiting for about 15 mins then a female doctor called me, she asked me about the questiones i answered yes to on my questionnaire, i had answered yes to question 1, 4, 12, 20 so she asked me alittle on Q1 & 4 and then she moved one to Q12 which was about when i was caused for being drunk and disordly in 2004, she wanted me to explain what happened so i did and then she said because i had this incident and it involved alcohol and america so hard up on things to do with alcohol ( which made me now nervous on what the embassy is going to say and do), that i had to have extra 3 blood tests to check that i didnt have a drinking problem ( not that you couldnt tell by just looking at me lol i dont really drink so much any more) which cost me extra £40 for the extra blood test, she then told me the limit for a women drinking is just 1 drink and that it also gose on your height , she then she was asking me how much do i drink a week? how many do i drink when im out? dose my fiance drink and how much? when was the last time i had a drink? she kept going on about how u shouldnt drink alot and telling me not to argue with the police ( which i had not argued ) so i was confused why she was acting like i had done, she was more interested in this caution then anything else, she then asked me my height and told me to weigh my self ( i had to tell her, she didnt get up off her chair to look ), then she told me to lay on the bed, she checked my heart, blood pressure, looked down my throught, shined a light in my eyes, looked down my pants lol and she said yes you are a women thats good lol, then she took the blood samples. that was it over and done with, then i had to go back to the waiting room , then the receptionist called me to pay, she gave me back my passport and vaccination records, she gave me info on the vaccinationes i needed, i asked for a copy of my blood test results, i paid £230 got a receipt and then left.I came out of the knightsbridge doctors at 2.30pm, after that we got something to eat then went more site seeing to few places like leicester square, piccadilly circus, trafalger square then we got the underground back to woodside park to where the car was and set off back home. we got home about 10.30pm , i was so glad to be home my feet was soo sore i could hardly walk lol.

Total cost of the day.

- Petrol £50

- Underground Tickets £5 each that was for the hole day .

- Medical with extra blood test £230

- Food £15

I found the medical to be rushed and its way to much money for what they do, the doctor was ok but she could of been more polite, but the overall day was good :).

Thank you for sharing your experiences, yorkshirerose22. My medical is next week, and I'm trying to stay calm and not worry too much. Sounds like your medical was a bit of a stress, so I hope everything goes smoothly from now on.

Good luck with your medical, everything thing will be fine, i found it was not as bad i as thought, it was a very quick medical. The only thing im now worried about is her making a big deal of my drunk and disordly caution and what the embassy will say seen as she was a doctor and was making a big deal, and they dont tell u about anything to do with your medical at the end. like if everythings fine or not so that kinda makes me wonder on that.

Sounds like you got the same doctor as me. She really doesn't seem interested in doing a medical. She just likes to pick up on one thing and ask stupid questions and be annoying about it. She needs to get a job she likes! I noticed that the women that were there had to wear a robe and I was wondering why. I was told to strip to the waist to get the chest x-ray then I put my clothes back on. I was wondering if the women got some kind of extra check when I saw them in robes. The medical is stressful but it is more a case of stressing yourself about nothing. Really all they are checking for is Aids/Hiv, TB or any drug use. The rest of it doesn't matter much to them. They don't have a free health service so you aren't gonna cost them money if you are ill. They just don't want anyone spreading nasty diseases around. So the blood test and x-ray are really the only things that matter and they just go through the motions with the other stuff. £190 for that is a rip off but we have no choice. They don't have any competition.

I was told at the end that my blood test results would come back in 2 days and they would contact me if there was a problem but if not they'd forward it to the embassy so in this case no news is good news.

I think that they don't really say much about the outcome of the medical because they can't say how well you've done until the bloods and xray are back.

yeah i noticed that about the women having to stay in the gowns, i saw a few guys and they was jus coming out of the x ray and going back to the other waiting room while i was sent to another as so did another women, then i was called by a doctor. she was a asian lady an i jus thought she could of been more polite. some of her choice of words and the way she said stuff to me could off been more professional.

i think they charge what they do because they know we have to go through this to be with our loved ones n know we are going to pay. It is a rip off , im so glad i didnt pay for the vaccinations their it cost even more.

Hi Yorkshire Rose22, great report! Thanks for doing it. It really helps us all be prepared.

Can I ask you a question, regarding the HPV Vaccine they said you would need to have...? I am 26 years old and I will be 27 by the time we apply for AOS after we get married. So do you or anyone else know whether I will still have to have this? I thought the vaccination requirements are for AOS not for the application of the K1.

Hi,

I had my medical this morning, at Bentinck Mansions...

I left home in plenty of time, reaching Euston at 9:06am for a 10:30 appointment. I'm glad I went so early - the Tube is extremely busy at that time, and to avoid being completely crushed I let at least 5 trains pass. Thankfully they come every minute or two (Victoria line from Euston to Oxford Circus). The train to Bond Street (one stop on the Central line) wasn't nearly as busy by the time I got there. After exiting Bond Street station onto Oxford Street, I gave Knightsbridge Doctors a call to confirm that my appointment was definitely at Bentinck Mansions.

Finding the place was easy - just follow the helpful map they provide on the website. Bentinck Mansions is a grand white stone house near one end of Bentinck Street (no.15 if I remember correctly), with Knightsbridge Doctors being in Flat 4. You have to buzz them to be let in. I saw a small brass plaque saying "Knightsbridge Doctors" on the wall at the entrance.

The receptionist took my name, then asked for my passport, vaccination records, questionnaire, and passport photo (mine was UK size), before asking me to take a seat in the waiting area. Ten minutes or so later (I got there at 10:05) I was given the second questionnaire to fill in, together with a statement of permission for my blood tests to sign. Perhaps another 10-15 minutes after that I was called down to the end room for my chest X-ray. The radiographer was a kindly man, perhaps mid-forties. He was cheerful and put me at ease immediately. I was told to strip to the waist and after being weighed, to press up against the X-ray plate. He moved my hands into the right position (palms up behind the waist, elbows in), gave me a lead cover to hold in my hands (for my waist/legs), then told me to take a deep breath and hold. The lights went out, "click", and the X-ray was done. I was then told to get dressed and wait in the waiting area.

About 20-30 minutes later my name was called again, this time by a blond-haired, mid-to-late-thirties doctor. She had a slight foreign accent, but was easily understandable. She introduced herself, shook my hand, and told me to sit down. After asking me a few questions - whether I was fit and healthy, any chest illnesses, any operations, and a few other things - she asked me to remove my shoes. She then weighed me, measured my height, and did a quick sight test (reading the second line up from the bottom on their test chart - very easy and not at all a problem if your sight is reasonable). I was then asked to remove my shirt and sit on the bed - she looked into my ears and throat, listened to my breathing, took my blood pressure and pulse, then took my blood sample. After that she got me to lie back, legs straight, and checked my stomach and genitals for swelling. All the while the doctor made small talk, asking me about which country I wanted the visa for, where I was going to live, when I was getting married etc. She was professionally friendly, and put me at ease very quickly.

That was it - I got dressed, she made a few marks on my forms, wished me luck and told me to sit in the waiting area. Perhaps five minutes later I was called out to the reception, where I paid my £190 and the friendly receptionist (dark-haired girl) went through my copy of the vaccination form with me (I'd had all my required vaccinations on the NHS a couple of months ago), explained that it'd take 4 working days for my results to reach the Embassy (assuming no problems with the blood test and X-ray), and said goodbye. I was out by around 11:30.

All in all, it wasn't too stressful. Get your paperwork right, and it's pretty smooth sailing.

That was very helpful and reassuring, thank you, inhopeofglory. My medical is on Thursday, and I'm starting to go a bit stir crazy with the nerves and anxiety over the whole thing. I hope I get the same doctor as you did, as it sounds like they were very good at putting you at ease.
