So I had my medical today. It went something a little like this.

1. Had an appointment with my regular GP surgery this morning to see the nurse.  Had an MMR and TDP (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio) shot done. Both free on the NHS.

2. Got off at Bond Street station and walked (building is tricky to find, they say 4 Bentinck Mansions but there's another building with a number 4 on it which is across the street and a totally different business)

3. Greeted by receptionist who asked for my paperwork which I gave her (along with drivers license and passport sized pictures)

4. Given a bottle to pee in and some paperwork to fill out (medical questionnaire to fill out in waiting area)

5. Took a pee (for gonorrhea) and handed it to her in a red plastic see-through bag (nice clean bathroom available, quite a swanky building)

6. Waited in the waiting area for about 3 minutes

7. Very jolly bloke called me to do my chest x-ray (makes a lot of jokes, told me on the spot that the x-ray was fine)

8. Back into the waiting area again for about 10 minutes

9. Called by Doctor (young Chinese/British guy very friendly) to his room.  Asked me all the same questions I'd filled out on questionnaire before conducting an eye sight test, checked my ears, neck area.  I then took my top off and layed on my back (nothing dodgy, all above board!) and he pressed on my stomach in several places and listened to my breathing, front and back.  He then took a blood test and said it was for syphilis only.  That was the end of that.

10. Back into the waiting area. Was called after about 5 minutes and told that there was no need to see the nurse as my immunisations were fine and up to date.

11. Went and paid the £290. The most painful part of the whole day.  I was given a receipt and a copy of the DS-3025 which states that the US vaccination requirements are complete.

And that was it. I was there for about 35-40 minutes. It will take around 4 working days for the results to come in and for it to be courriered to the US Embassy. If you hear nothing back from them you can assume all is well. The package will be there waiting for you upon arrival for your interview.

Hope that was helpful.

Have mine next week - reading this just made me feel a whole lot better... Thank you!

Other than absolutely hating needles (and having to pay out almost £300!), it sounds pretty ok :)

Glad it went well for you!

You're very welcome! It's really nothing to worry about. The only advice I would give you is to get any imminisations you may need (MMR, tetanus, Influenza) as if you're not up to date you will be required to have them done there in Knightsbridge and it's a total rip off. I had my influenza and tetanus done the week before my medical and the MMR the morning of. It's free on the NHS. The MMR of you need it is a two part vaccination but if you go there having had just the one, they will waiver the second part due to insufficient time. I went back to my doctor 2 weeks later and got the second part.

All the best!

P.S the interview is equally as stress free. Just make sure you're organised and have your things in order. Look at the checklists and check, check and check again. Preparation is everything. :)

Yes, went and had the first MMR (wasn't sure if I needed two parts or not - thanks for confirming) and the TDaP... Had seen the extortionate fees for the jabs at the medical (and over in the US), so wanted to avoid that at all costs. I wont have time now to do the second dose before the medical, so I'm glad to hear they will waive that part.

Having a few problems getting the right medical summary from my doctor - unfortunately, I am constantly buffered by the (clueless) receptionists, who keep insisting that the full medical history (just a computer printout listing every single trip to the hospital or doctor I've ever had) they provided is sufficient :( I've literally just taken them a note written in huge font, outlining EXACTLY what I need from the GP... Let's hope they get it back to me in time!

Thanks again for your help!

You definitely don't need to provide your medical history and every time you've had a cold! There is a summary they can print out that states every time you have ever been in hospital (for example I had sinus surgery and a broken ankle in the past) and any medical issues (mine said asthma and eczema). I also Google Imaged the two medications I am on (inhaler and eczema cream) and printed it off to take with me to the medical examination. Not essential but looks good.

As as far as the vaccinations go, my records only went back as far as 1992 so I had no record of childhood vaccinations. That's why I got a Tetanus booster. It's safe to get another if you're not sure. Tetanus I believe you need 3 over the course of your life to be fully covered.

And by by the way, I was able to get all my info printed by the receptionists. Didn't need to see my doctor at all. And it was done for free. I've heard other people say they were charged a fee which I think is disgusting.

One last tip, get any paperwork they give you stamped for authenticity. They should have a stamp with their surgery name and address :)

I just had a call from the surgery manager to say it would be easiest to come in and actually speak to the doctor face to face, during which time he can write out the summary. That's booked for Friday, so I feel a little better now. I definitely agree that it should be something the receptionist / manager is able to do, but unfortunately, they're not the sharpest tools, where I go :)  Good tip regarding the official stamp - I shall make a note of that! Thanks!

I hate it when essential things I need are out of my control... I'll feel much better as soon as Friday comes and goes!

Outrageous that they charge.  I can't stand incompetence.

Yes, they are employed to do a job for the public, by the public, so how can writing out a medical summary for one of their patients be outside of that role, and therefore deemed chargeable?!

It has been months but I still can not believe how much I paid. £290 for a medical, it would have been much cheaper to do it in Belgium I think. Also the receptionist was so rude and patronising. Also they tried to charge me even more for an MMR booster but I refused to have it there.
