Since people here kind of freaked out over my medical experience (having my legs spread wider than the channel tunnel)

If you get the Asian lady (Doctor Feng I think), she is the one who made me do that. So if you see her call your name, expect awkwardness :D

I had a lady who I believe was from South Africa and she literally just had a quick peek. Sounds like you were unlucky in this regard!

I had a young, blonde woman and she just peeked. A South African lady did my x-ray since she said my name wrong and said "sorry, I'm from South Africa".

Try to get as many vaccinations done while still in UK simply because of cost. You can get them in the US since on a K-1 you don't need them until you file for AOS, but they cost a fortune here. Much cheaper there, and free if you can get them from NHS.

All medical exams require a gential check, but most Western doctors in Western medical offices just do a quick peek just so they can check off the box which says they did. In Asia, with a much higher rate of STD, they do take it seriously, which probably explains the Asian doctor in the last post.

sorry. I meant to say for those that had their medicals on the 28th of January, has anyone noticed an update on the ceac.state.gov website?

My medical was the 23rd and it updated on the 29th however if you take into account the weekend, this was four working days from my medical so if your fiances was the 28th I'd expect to see it update on Monday or Tuesday :)

Not sure what you are asking? The red book is another acceptable way to prove UK given immunizations. It isn't required. Doctor records are the usual way people get a list of their immunizations.

Did you see my reply about the Tdap? Only one for an adult per the CDC and their sub organization ACIP.

I guess I was confused by the required documents on the Knightsbridge website. Since we don't have anything similar here in the states, I don't exactly know what the little red book is, other than a document with immunizations in it. If it's not required then, I suppose that is for the best.

Yes, I did see your post. He's more concerned right now with being 'under' immunized when he moves here. He just doesn't want to put his health at risk if he has the possibility of getting exposed to something due to not having all his injections.

However, if I understood your post, as an almost 24 year old, he should be sufficient with one set of Tdap dosings?? Or does he, waiver technicality aside, need all 3 to be fully protected?

I'm American so don't know what the "little red book" is either, but I think it is something that Mum's had, that the doctor (or school?) filled in as shots were given. So they are saying if your GP surgery doesn't have the record, the red book Mum might have is good enough. When my kids were little, I had a card on them and took it with me when they were due shots at the pediatrician. New shots and dates were added. Then when they started school, that card was enough evidence to prove immunizations without going back to the pediatrician for proof. Seems the same but not in a red book.

Adult immunity is considered covered by a Tdap. Or if nothing since childhood, a Td to updates the tetanus. I had a severe cut on my finger that required ER then surgery two years ago. Since I could not remember my last tetanus they gave me a Td. Seems like now a Td is the standard instead of a T alone.

In the last decade, pertussis (whooping cough) has resurged in the US. School immunizations started requiring middle school and junior high kids to get a Tdap even though they had DTP series as babies. Also there was a TV ad campaign urging grandparents to get Tdap if they would be around baby grandchildren who were not fully immunized yet for pertussis. I think the concern was getting the adults covered to protect the babies, not that whooping cough is fatal to an adult. Diptheria is still pretty rare. Tetanus protects against lockjaw if you step on a rusty nail or get a cut from a dirty object. It should be renewed every 10 years. I think he will be fine health wise with his recent Tdap.

Reading CDC in depth about MMR says 90% are protected with one shot. They throw in the second dose as a requirement just to make sure that other 10% get immunity.

How much should we expect to spend on Medical expenses?

KJEret

For me:

Flu jab (before March) - £7 from Asda. Tetanus and MMR booster - tell your GP you're "travelling" - Free.

Copy of vaccination list: £10

Knightsbridge Medical - £245 + travel (£55)
