Percentages

I'm doing stats at work. I hate stats. I hate percentages. I'm confused.

I need to show that Number A has increased by more than 25% to become Number B. I can work out what 25% of Number A is, then add that to it to make Number C. But I can't work out how to get Number B as a percentage of Number A.

To clarify somewhat:

Number A is 20

Number B is 26.

I know that Number B is more than 25% greater. But what percentage is it? What's the formula?

Cheers in advance.

Is it that simple? I feel so stupid.

In my defence, um, I am quite stupid. I just use big words sometimes to hide it.

Thank you unconditionally for your most felicitous response. :P

You're welcome. :lol:

Oh and don't worry. This is definitely not the stupidest math question I've been asked (I used to be a math teacher). :thumbs:

Phew. Cheers. :)

So, the next two numbers are 9 and 13.

13/9 = 1.4

1.4 as a fraction is...? (I fell asleep during these classes, obviously...)

Well, 13/9 actually is 1.444444. Which means that 13 is 44.444% greater than 9.

1.444444444 as a fraction is, as you said, 13/9.

1.4 doesn't really have anything to do with the question, but 1.4 as a fraction is 7/5.

I think I have some fraction/percentages worksheet packets around somewhere... I can send you a copy. :P

Steve. Maths Dunce.

A = 20

B = 26

The increase is:

B - A = 6

so the increase is 6/20 = 0.30 = 30%

or more simply stated:

percentage increase of A to B = 100 * ((B - A) / A)

OK, I'm getting a cold sweat now. I'm 9 years old again and my Irish Maths teacher with the erratic temper is standing over me. He has a big red moustache. Urgh, I hate Maths.

So, the figure after the decimal point is the percentage? Why didn't they teach me this at school? I can understand that. It's not difficult. Bloody Irishman.

Thank you again.

:lol: Math teachers *are* scary.

To convert any decimal to a percentage, just multiply by 100, or move the decimal point 2 places to the right.

.5 = 50%

2.5 = 250%

.04 = 4%

So 1.444444444 is 144.444444% (or in the context of the problems that you're working, a 44.44444% increase)

SteveLaura,

Just in case you weren't confused enough, that's an infinite number of 4's after the decimal point :P

If you ever go to a Maths Teachers convention and see an Irishman with a big, red moustache, probably in his 50s, who says his name is Mr. Hughes - kick him.

Cheers.

Easy stuff. Engineers deals with math about 1000000x difficult than this than. These are very basic just like 1+1=2. Next time, don't blame engineers for making faulty bridges, and tunnels. It's already hard enough to build them correctly. ^_^
