Hello!

I'm planning to apply for naturalization soon, came on K1 but will be applying under 5 years rule (been here longer than that).

Lifted conditions in 2020.

My question is:

There's a requirement to bring a passport to the interview to show that all previous travel to the US was legal.

I have my passport, but it expired, and the wait in the embassy to renew is ridiculous (I'm 900-ish on the waitlist right now).

Will it cause any problems during the interview if I don't receive a new passport by then and only will show my expired one?

Or should I wait to file until I have a new passport on hand?

You should bring all your passports, doesn't matter if they're valid or expired. I brought three passports, the IO only wanted to see the one with my K-1 visa in it, and the newest passport.

K-1: 12-22-2015 - 09-07-2016

AP: 12-20-2016 - 04-07-2017

EAD: 01-18-2017 - 05-30-2017

AOS: 12-20-2016 - 07-26-2017

ROC: 04-22-2019 - 04-22-2020
Naturalization: 05-01-2020 - 03-16-2021

U.S. passport: 03-30-2021 - 05-08-2021

The problem is that I don't have a current passport, only expired one. I'm waiting for the embassy to have an appointment slot, and then it's up to 3 months to get a passport.

And I'm wondering if it's going to be an issue during N-400 interview that I don't have a current unexpired passport from my country of origin (which I was advised above shouldn't be an issue).

No, it shouldn't be an issue. Bring paperwork for passport renewal to prove your passport is at embassy.

The person said "it doesn't matter if they are valid or expired". So you do not need a current, unexpired passport.

You also mentioned that they wanted your newest passport. I don't have that. What did they want the newest passport for?

She looked at it because I had it. You don't have one, so there's nothing to look at other than the expired you one you'll bring. She looked at my newest passport likely because that was the only passport I had actually used for travelling after moving to the US.

Thank you! Now it makes sense.

Your newest passport might very well be the same expired passport you are talking about. You're overthinking it.
