Travel for greencard holders

My husband (a Norwegian citizen) and I (a U.S. citizen) applied for his green card before the pandemic, and it was granted in 2021. Due to job uncertainty during the pandemic, we postponed our move and have been living in Norway ever since. Last year, we had our first child and are planning to travel to the U.S. next month to visit family and friends. We have also travelled to the US since that time and had no problems but given the current situation/news stories regarding greencard holders, I am unsure what to do. Given that he has not lived in the U.S. since obtaining his green card, should he relinquish it and apply for an ESTA instead, or would it be better to keep it in case we decide to move in the future? 

 

Has anyone been in a similar situation that could share some advice?

You are right to be concerned.  He has been using a Green Card as a visitor visa.  I would be prepared for extreme scrutiny next month.  He will probably be given the opportunity to surrender his Green Card when he arrives. However, no one can be certain what will happen.

How has he been maintains the US as his legal permanent residency?

Are you still planning on moving to the US? If not, the right thing to do is to give up the greencard and use ESTA or a visitor visa. Greencards are not for visiting. They're for living in the US
