After paying the immigrant visa fee AND after entering the US for a quick vacay and for activating PR status, do you need to WAIT for the physical green card in the mail before returning to home country to finish off final affairs before making the final move to the U.S ?

Also, can you apply for a social security card using the visa stamp in the passport?

No, your endorsed visa acts as a temporary green card for a year.

And yes. But are you sure you didn’t tick the box on the DS-260 to have it sent automatically? Most people do and then you don’t need to apply in person.

ah yes! I forgot about that box on DS260, I'll have to double check

So you dont have to wait for the physical GC in the mail if one needs to go back home to finalize affairs prior to final move to the US?

No. You can turn around and return on the next flight if you wish. As above, the endorsed visa works exactly the same as the plastic GC for the first year. https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/temporary-i-551-stamps-and-mrivs

Just keep in mind as soon as you have the temporary I-551 endorsed, you become subject to US taxes.  For example, if you sell a property in the UK, you will be taxed on the proceeds.  This is something people often overlook.

If you didn't tick the box on the DS-260, you will need an appointment with the SSA; there are no more walk ins.  These can be hard to come by, just as a heads up.

cool beans. I checked the DS260, and I selected the box to receive a SS card - so no need to go to the SS office to apply for one  right?

yes, aware of the selling of the house.

Also, speaking of taxes, is UK PENSION considered FOREIGN INCOME when it comes to filing taxes in the U.S?

Yep, it’ll be delivered to the address you have given within a couple of weeks.

https://www.irs.gov/businesses/the-taxation-of-foreign-pension-and-annuity-distributions

With respect to government pensions/public pensions/annuities (typically covered under the Government Service article) or social security payments, generally the payments are only taxable by the country in which the government is making the payments. Note that what constitutes a government pension or public pension is dictated by the treaty, and the rule may apply narrowly.

If paying on pension in UK , then report the pension on form 2555 for the yearly exclusion

If not taxed in UK ,  then , yes need to pay US taxes BUT read the above site from IRS to understand
