California high-speed rail project needs $7 billion by next summer

 

California's embattled high-speed rail project will soon need at least $7 billion in order to move forward. 
 

During a budget hearing focused on transportation in the State Assembly on Wednesday, Helen Kerstein with the California Legislative Analyst's Office told lawmakers the project faces a $7 billion budget gap and the funds need to be secured by next June. If not, Kerstein said it will create yet another delay for plans to finish the project's first segment between Merced and Bakersfield.

 

"There is no specific plan to meet that roughly $7 billion gap, we also think there is some risk that gap could grow," Kerstein said. "This isn't a way out in the future funding gap. This is a pretty immediate funding gap."

"...some risk that gap could grow" - from the same clowns that sold everyone a lower number earlier for the entire project...........

this is an excellent illustration of:
"The sunk cost fallacy" is a cognitive bias where people continue investing resources (time, money, effort) in a failing endeavor, even when the best course of action is to stop, because of the resources already invested

The only partially completed segment so far connects a field and an orchard and has cost $1.4 billion for 22 miles of raised dirt; along with 11 overpass structures. Zero feet of track have been laid to date.

 

i wonder what percentage of the population of California who were alive when it was conceived will still be with us if it is ever completed

this is starting to sound like another episode of "fleece the taxpayers"

The irony here is that the budget MAY drop if fuel prices plummet to transport in all the parts ..via truck.

Fracking will help them build their climate-conscious train lol

Would be a lot simpler and solve a great many things if, consequent to an earthquake over the San Andreas Fault, California fell into the Specific Ocean.
