Well, my 8 year old daughter had her first day at school today in 3rd grade, and Im so glad its over.

Coming from a grim council estate in the north of London, England (not pretty), I was terrified of her being out of my sight.

She seemed to cope OK. We had informed her of the US meaning of "rubber", so she didnt slip up there or raise her eyebrows when it came to pledging alliegance to the flag.

Tomorrow, she will brave the 'SCHOOL BUS", its what nightmares are made of to me.

Im sweating already, imagining her ending way across town, with a demon bus driver...

Has anybody else had to 'let go' for the first time in the states ?

Or is it just me, being over worrying?

Hi! Glad to hear the first day went well! I have two of my 3 daughters starting on the 5th of September. One will be a sophmore in High School and my youngest will be going into the 5th grade. I am anervous wreck! They have only ever attended school in Europe, so this is all new to them. My oldest will start University in January.

I don't know what they should bring the first day, assuming just a notebook and pen so that they can write down all the things they need. Thank god they are going to private schools so hey will have to wear a uniform and no need to worry about fitting in clothes side.

Have you spoken with her teacher and explained her situation? As a teacher, I think it's important that s/he knows that your child is going through a transition and that you're there if s/he needs you.

Good luck to her!!

School started on Monday here but the kids don't come 'til next Monday so I'm just cleaning/organizing for now.

Good luck to everyone!!

My daughter arrived safely home on the school bus yesterday, so all was well.

Luckily I have the car in the morning (bus leaves at 7am!) so its only the return journey, she needs it.

I was quite surprised that we had to buy school supplies, my daughter loved it of course

(high school musical 'I love troy' folders etc...)

My husbands (usc) experience of school is 20 odd years old, so he couldn't really shed any light on procedures, but the teachers have been really helpful and welcoming

Of course, she had the expected interest in her english accent, where she was from etc which Im sure she loved.

I just can't wait now til I receive my EAD, then I think Ill start feeling more human, being able to get out and meet other

people in my area, to feel 'normal', I can't wait !!

again all the best!!!!
