Hi everyone!

I am still working on this I-130 form and have a question about the Employment section.

Previously (8+ years ago) I was self employed, but retired then.

I know I put RETIRED as my current employer, but online the dates are mandatory.  If anyone knows for certain, I would appreciate some guidance.

1) What would you put the date field?  The date of my retirement until today's date?  Or the dates where I was employed (that spans back decades), etc? Or something else?

2) There is also a field (on the same page) as "What was your employment".  I guess I would put what I was before Retirement?

Thanks everyone!

Self Employed is Employed, they are asking about your work history.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Good Luck!

Thanks! (They are only looking for 5 years of employment. Retirement has been longer than that).

If they only want the last 5 years then just put your retirement.

If you’re retirement age then it may be worth considering any other eligible family members petitioning your son too as back up. Not a nice thought I know but may end up being a good decision.

Thanks for the reply! It is the dates that have me confused. Would I put the date that my retirement began until Today's date? Or? I'm not sure (and it is a mandatory field).

And yes, I share your concern about that.  He is applying a different route as well (but I am the only family member who could petition him via an i-130).

Thanks again!

I’d just put the date it began as that covers more than 5 years.

I hope the other route works. 🤞
