EAD not activated?????

Ok, so here I am about to start a job in two weeks time. I went to the DMV today to get myself a ID card. I had everything with me they say on their website to take with you. When the guy saw my EAD and my SS card he looked in the pc and he said that something was wrong with the EAD and he couldn't issue me an ID card.

After that I went to the SS office because I have been waiting for my new SS card with my married name for weeks now and I wanted to know what was going on with that (I called their info line once and was told they had some sort of delay in processing things). The lady that helped me was like, oh no, this is so not right and tried to see in the system what was going on and she was the one that said, uhoh, it says your EAD is not activated yet and then she went on like, that's so weird because I have your EAD rigth here in front of me and this is not supposed to happen in the system. She did some electronic filling or whatever and she told me if all goes well things should be straightned out within a week with regards to my SS card and I asume my EAD.

Has anyone ever experienced something like this before? I will call USCIS tomorrow right away to see what they can tell me, but is just weird and now I am scared that it can cause problems with my employer too and I don't want that to happen. They already know about the SS card issue, but since I have my EAD card I asume everything is ok with that and not to be told that it is not activated?????

Anyone have any advice in this?

I dont think they had a problem with the EAD, more likely the SSN is so new it is not on the "High number list" published by SSA, and that is what he was hung on. SSA publishes a list of highest numbers monthly that is a flat text file, that any one with interest can tap into to confirm valid numbers. Your SSA may be higher than the current list or the DMV may be using an older list on their computers.

See: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/employer/stateweb.htm

Here is the current list: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/employer/highgroup.txt

My personal one starts 062- and the second group is less than what is on the list so is valid, in my case if a handed a card lets say is 062-97-XXXX looking at the High Group List chart it would be declared invalid.

I applied for my SS card as soon as I got here last year and it was issued to me in August 2006. In May 2007 I wanted to change my name on it and I have been waiting ever since for my new card with my married name on it. It's not even the SS card that worries me 'cause I am sure that will be sorted out eventually, it's the fact that someone checked in their system and tells me my EAD has not been activated or whatever that means.

Then it should not be the SSN that they had a problem with. I would try a different DMV office.

Their EAD might not verifying in S.A.V.E. It's supposed to be up-to-date but I wasn't in it a week after my EAD was issued (I was in it a couple days after that though).

YuAndDan -

I have had my SS# for over 30 years (I am a US Citizen by birth). Based on the High numbers you linked, my social security number is clearly above the watermark.

Does this only apply to new SS#s? or does it apply to all SS#s?

Thanks!

All SSN, you look for the first 3 digits on the page that match your number, then your second 2 should be lower than the 2nd listed with the middle 2 digits. Mine is 062-6X-XXXX the chart shows 062-96-XXXX mine is lower than that number so is valid.

Look at the TEXT file.

Mine is 136-nn-####.

my nn is greater then 19.

The list shows 136-19-####.

I have been getting all of my SS statements every year without issue.

I believe that list of numbers is being misinterpreted. Certainly the numbers on there do not represent the highest issued SSN numbers, as I myself have a SSN that has the middle numbers "86" where according to that list the highest number issued after my first 3 digits is "13". I'm guessing some more information is needed to interpret that list.

My SSN number was issued 14 years ago BTW.
